Hi

Our son who is 29 is on ESA support group the old style and receives enhanced DL & Enhanced Mobility PIP.

Will this migrate soon to the UC?
My husband is his appointee (aswell as our youngest sons)

Will our son need any Assesments etc ?
Thank you.

    PIP isn't relevant.

If his ESA is Income Related or Contribution Based + Income Related then yes he will be migrated, letters are going out up until December 2025.

No he won't need any assessments, LCWRA will be added to his claim due to being in the Support Group for ESA.

Oh I’m not sure what one it is.

I know PIP not relevant I was just explaining his situation and the only income he receives

I’m unsure of the difference between them both but he’s never worked before and never will sadly.

Was he originally claiming Incapacity benefit? If so then a lot of people that transferred from that to ESA were placed onto contributions based ESA.

Does he live alone or with you? If with you do you all claim a qualifying disability benefit?

Was he ever on the old Incapacity Benefit?

How much is his ESA payment currently?

The only benefit he’s had in his name is DLA which then went to PIP & Old style ESA

    £318 every 2 weeks.

He lives at home with us. I’m not sure what you mean by qualifying disability benefit Poppy? Sorry 😊

Then his ESA is most likely 100% Income Related.

Ok so between now & December 2025 he’ll receive a migration letter.

Yes that's right. After the letter has been received, his appointee will have three months to apply for UC in his behalf.

Financially he will be better off as LCWRA pays more than ESA SG for a single adult not getting SDP (Severe Disability Premium).

£809.64 a month is what he will be entitled to under UC.

He doesn't actually have to wait for a migration letter before applying for UC.

    Ok thank you.
Whose name would the SDP be in? I’m sure we do or did get that but would that be for my husband?

SDP is a disability premium that’s payable with certain means tested benefits such as Income Related ESA. It’s not a benefit on its own.

For you in your household it’s only payable if all the adults are claiming a disability benefit such as PIP daily living or DLA mid/high rate care, or registered blind. No one must be claiming either carers allowance or carers element of UC for looking after you.

I was talking about your son's ESA.

From the financial amount you posted I don't think he's getting it in his name.

Ok Poppy, as you know our 19 year old son gets Pip enhanced DL.
My husband gets standard Pip for DL.
Then the 29 yr old receives enhanced DL pip.
My husband & I are both receiving carers allowance for caring for a child & a young adult each.
I don’t receive any disability benefit for myself.

As you don’t claim a disability benefit for yourself then your elder son will not be entitled to SDP even if you weren’t claiming carers allowance for looking after him.

This means that he would be about £120/month better off by claiming UC.

That's good to hear. Christmas Day was filled with toys, fun and laughter, spent with my 2 grandchildren, daughters and son in law.

Sounds lovely Poppy. My children are too old for toys now which is sad but I have quite a few little nieces and nephews to spoil ☺️
