Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any experience with applying for council housing and being on benefits? I have LCWRA and UC and I’m worried when applying for council housing they will stop the benefits. Does anyone know if they do this?

Thank you

    No they don't do that.

I have LCWRA within UC and also live in a council home.

This wouldn’t happen. My daughter is a social housing tenant, we live together and she claims help with her share of the rent from UC.

    Wont stop your benefits.
My experience with applying has not been pleasant, local council wouldnt even let me on the register. I am on the neighbouring register, but very quickly discovered chances of a property were pretty much zero.

That must be in England. According to my experience, councils are a bit more flexible in Scotland when it comes to registration, even though, applicants with no priority will have to wait for at least.. 3000 days, depending on the area, so it's a fail from scratch. I gave up just after reading this :

'A housing emergency was declared in Edinburgh in November 2023 due to significant pressures on the city’s housing market, including homelessness rates and housing costs.

In November 2023 there were around 5,000 homeless households in Edinburgh being supported in temporary accommodation. These households account for around 7,000 individuals, with around 1,300 of the overall homeless population living in accommodation that is classed as unsuitable.'

Yep its in England, councils have freedom on their registration rules.
