Hi, I'm AuDHD. I have a question about leaving my parents' home

Hi everyone. I currently live with my parents, who are elderly (I'm 45). Mum has a lot of serious health conditions that are getting worse (she gets AA and blue badge). Dad recently had a heart issue that required surgery and a pacemaker.

I'm autistic, and have all the other neurodivergent things like ADHD and Dyslexia etc.., plus OCD, General and Social anxiety, and back issues and sciatica, and cluster migraines (I'm made up of factory seconds, basically)

Because of mum's failing health and Dad's age, it's getting difficult for them to care for me. Despite the fact Dad had a good job, and has a pretty good pension, it all took a toll on his finances too, so he had to go into an IVA and has equity release on the house with interest that is added to the debt each month. I mention this because his income and having a home etc… precludes a lot of help, whilst he's still not in the good position it might seem.

So, we're all concerned because they have limited and diminishing capability to continue to look after me, and they may need care themselves pretty soon, especially mum, and regardless, they're looking to the future, given their age, to when I will need to be somewhere on my own anyway,

I spoke to someone at the housing place, but they said that until I'm 56 days away from being homeless, there's not much to do. They also wanted to know Mum and dad's finances, and if I would stand to inherit anything (unlikely, but it wouldn't be much if I did)

I also think that I'd qualify for a 1 bedroom, despite certainly needing care, I don't think it would be accepted that overnight care is necessary. That's not only going to limit space, as I can't go outside, which I understand, but also means it will be a flat, and probably somewhere with lots of people, which will be really difficult.

So, given all that, I guess I'd just appreciate any advice, and I'm pretty lost and confused, and worried about the whole thing

Oh, I should have said, I currently get PIP at the higher rate for both parts, and legacy ESA in the support group with sever disability premium

Have you tried getting in touch with social services for a needs assessment about your care needs so they will know what support you will need in place when you do move? Also they would be able to talk to you about if there are different housing options available to you if you need them.

For social/council housing you can start by filling out a form and putting your name down on the list. As a single person who Is currently adequately housed, you could be waiting many years for a property.

Does your dad currently claim a disability benefit himself, such as PIP daily living, DLA mid/high rate care or AA? Or is he registered blind?

The reason I'm asking is because your ESA includes the SDP and for you to be entitled to this all the adults you live with must be claiming a qualifying disability benefit or registered blind.
