How run on works
I applied for UC on Fri 10th Jan, I received ESA on Wednesday 15th. Does anyone know how the run on payment works and for how many days I will receive. Will I get this on my typical pay day or will it be early.
Im confused how this works.

It does seem to vary, some get a full payment on their normal date, others like me got an early payment which wasn't a full two weeks worth.

Ive been told the run on starts from the day you claim, so because I claimed on the 10th and got paid on the 15th, I should get 9 days of run on but who knows. Yeah, I noticed some people that claimed on the same day as me and got ESA a few days later than me have already received a run on payment...it's massively confusing because i have no idea if and when I'll receive anything and I don't want an advance as I don't want the debt.

I’m doing my own claim 2 weeks from today (6/2/2025) but that Thursday isn’t the day that I actually get an ESA into my bank 🏦 account.

It will be 24 hours after the ESA payment has been made that I do my claim for Universal Credit. My ESA is on the Wednesday (5/2/2025), I claim on the Thursday. I was going to claim on the day I get the payment although Citizens Advice's Help to Claim have played a part in me changing my mind and delaying the claim by another 24 hours. They've been saying to me that it'll be better for my run on payment by doing the claim on the following day.

I don’t mind this. After all I would be much happier to get every possible penny from my run on payment, an entire 14 days’ worth, and not any less.

My Employment & Support Allowance entitlement is £318.10, this amount has been paid to me biweekly since the last uprate to benefits last year. I don’t get the Severe Disability Premium, only the Enhanced Disability Premium. I’m doing a voluntary migration, a move across to UC sooner, as my income will vastly improve on UC. It’ll be a greater entitlement.

My income will increase because the LCRWA element of UC pays more than the amount from the ESA Support Group. 👍

All migration notices will be issued by the end of this year to the remaining Income Related ESA claimants but I don’t have to wait for it to show up. It could be many more months before it arrives if I just kept on waiting and remained on ESA until then.

It’s all random, how could someone possibly tell when it would arrive?
Your guess is as good as mine. They can turn up on any day, in any week, of any month.0 -
I got my migration notice and I just claimed straight away, I didn't see any point in waiting. I just wanted it over and done with.

They’re apparently wanting to send out 63,000 notices per month from February but, of course, whether they can meet the target they’ve set is another matter. I won’t have to think about the letter ✉️ because I’ll have already done the move 😀😂.

I think I can see that you’ve only recently joined the forum @bennyben. I’d like to say, welcome to this community. It is a fantastic one, members are kind, they like to help each other by giving top advice. 👍

I don’t see any point waiting for my notice to make an appearance, I just have to wait until the week the next then I’ll be doing that move. Although I wanted to claim on the Wednesday, I’m fine not sticking to my original plan. I’m fine doing it on the Thursday instead.

The advice can vary between advisors, it can be conflicting, but I’m still listening to what I’ve actually been told by some Help to Claim advisors and that’s to instead claim on the day after an ESA. They just think it’ll be better for my run on payment.

I was told by a Citizens Advice Help to Claim advisor that I couldn’t ask for my UC to be split into twice monthly payments (two payments a month) until my second assessment period begins. That advisor was incorrect @bennyben, I can apply for an Alternative Payment Arrangement, to get my payments split into two separate payments, from the very day that I do the claim. I’ll get half of my entitlement in my first payment, with the other half a fortnight later.
It is what it is, advice can vary, even if all advisors are meant to be trained to the same level of knowledge on a topic.
My assessment periods per month, 6th - 5th.0 -
The reason why my payments have to be more frequent than the default frequency of monthly @bennyben is because I know I wouldn’t be able to stretch over £800 entitlement to the following calendar month. Frequency of payments is just as important as the overall entitlement to me.
My claim will be done over the phone, I don’t want access to an online account.

After the run on payment there are meant to be no further Income Related ESA payments @bennyben. Poppy, a wonderful contributor to the Scope Online Community, told me that a deduction would be applied to the first payment if I happened to receive a further payment of ESA after the run on payment.
That better not happen.

The fact is, the ESA and UC departments don’t communicate with each other fast, it can take a few weeks for ESA to send the Support Group details across to UC. But, ESA better make sure that they don’t give me another payment after my run on payment. I don’t want any deductions to my first UC payment. It’s ESA’s responsibility to get my claimed closed down. Things can go wrong in the background, the world of automated systems.

Even though a claim is updated after a few weeks, to reflect that you were in the Support Group on Income Related ESA, I’m the “better to be safe than sorry” sort of individual. I’ll be doing a check on my claim, via a 📞 phone call, a few weeks after my claim date 6/2/2025 (a Thursday) to see that UC have placed me into their equivalent of the ESA Support Group, the LCWRA group. @bennyben
