    Hi Amazingblazing62,

I'm so sorry that you have experienced this episode with your Supra Pubic Catheter, you are not alone! As a retired Community Nurse, I am aware that this situation can occur but it is very distressing for the individual suffering from this problem. Protocols these are that the catheter isn't changed unless it is actually blocked and no urine is passing through, even if it is by-passing (leaking). I'm pleased that you have been given antibiotics (not always done these days as it is preferred for your body to fight infection!). Whilst it can be difficult, it is encouraged that you increase your fluid intake. Juices such as Cranberry juice (providing you are able to take this without affecting any other medication that suggests it may affect the way some meds work), or Lemon Barley Water are often recommended to help reduce sedimentation in the bladder and reduce risk of blockage but also help to 'flush' the bladder and reduce stagnation which can often be a cause of infection. To help reduce back flow, does your catheter bag 'hang' supported? This prevents 'drag' from the catheter which can also be a problem as it can cause back flow.

I hope this might help explain some of the known difficulties that catheters can cause.

I'm pleased to hear that you managed to find some 'friendly' people during your stay and hope that the staff treated you well. Take care, hope the infection clears soon and you are feeling much better soon.

Sorry to read of your issue AmazingBlazing

I'm pleased however that they got you sorted out and meeting nice people is always a bonus!

I have an indwelling catheter but the infection risk will be similar. I bought some Reagent Urine Test Strips from Amazon (any pharmacy will probably sell them too). They're easy to use and have been accurate thus far.

I find them helpful as an additional source of information I can offer the District Nurses, who are very reliable up here.

    Just a thought,

    Good luck

    Luke

I'm sorry to hear you've had to deal with this awful situation @amazingblazing628 😓 I hope you get to go home soon and it all clears up. I'm glad you found some nice people to chat to. When I was in hospital for quite a few weeks some years ago I had some wonderful chats with other patients in the ward. I hope the staff have been helpful too!

Please do let us know how you get on
