I had a journal message to say I'd get a call on the 24th. It happened & I had to send 4 months statements & the photo ID copies by the 7th Feb, I did it this morning. There was no mention of Paypal, but as they can see I use PP, I've just downloaded the last 4 months in case they ask, so thanks for the heads up.

@JessieJ oh, so you got the call first? I just got a journal message. You have the same dates as me, well done you for getting the info together so quickly 😊

Hi I've just had a Universal credit review as well. I was asked to provide 4 month of bank statements as well. On the telephone appointment I was asked did I use PayPal and I said only very occasionally if I buy something from Ebay and that was the only mention of PayPal.

Re the photo ID question. My partner didn't have any so universal credit made arrangement for a verification appointment with the job centre for him. He took various letters from the DWP and NHS as evidence and this was accepted.

    Hope this information is useful.

@RadlvsRip after all this hassle, even if they don't ask for it they're getting it! 😆

The ID is a weird one. I went back to my maiden name 2 years ago. I informed the DWP, HMRC etc but never got round to changing my passport so it's still in my old name. They already know this as last month I renewed my tenancy agreement and had to show bank statements, now they want photo ID again knowing I haven't got it 🤷‍♀️

@Kimmy87 I've heard of others being asked re PayPal.. including my brother inlaw, his friend was sent a link by UC showing him how to send them PayPal statements. So it happens. And he told them there's no money in the account,it's only used to buy stuff through, like most of us. But they wanted the statements showing the balance for four months.

It was a message in the journal with the date & time, the call was two days later, not much time to panic! I saw your time limit was the same, funny that. I didn't have the bank statements & was set to call the bank, luckily, at midnight, I received my yearly bank statement email, so no call, just uploaded the months needed. Perfect timing! 😎

JessieJ how long do you need to be on UC before you get requests for bank statements?

These checks are random, so you can be selected for one at any time, or not at all.

Kimmy87 is it likely that I'll get a journal message too?-cos I've literally just migrated across on the 27th December -and what is this pay pal thing ?-or is it as I understand the DWP just looking for online wallets ?

As I said they are random so I've no idea if you will be selected for one.

PayPal is a digital payment service.

I've heard of Pay Pal but why are the DWP interested in it ?

Because as well as using it to pay for things, you can use it to store money in like a bank account.

Ahh right i see now -is this what is referred to as a digital wallet ? -and they need to check to see if you're not hiding a fortune?

I see Kimmy87 has replied, yes, they're random, so nothing to do with how long you've been on UC.

Well done for standing up to them. I hope you're successful in this.

Who are the ICO out of interest?.

Are you on UC or LCWRA?

I'm the same as most people in that I too am frightened because I know the DWP are always looking at ways to claw back money, sanction claimants and even taking them off benefits altogether.

Thank you Denni. I believe everyone needs to stand up for themselves & more importantly the right to privacy! Sorry, I should have said in my post more clearly. The ICO are the Information Commissioner’s Office who enforce data protection laws & protect individuals privacy. They investigate GDPR (data protection laws) & privacy breaches etc. I contacted them as I knew the DWP UC review process was a breach of both. & the legislation they told me they are using is ‘UC, PIP, Jobseekers & ESA (decisions and appeals regulation 2013 - 38(2)’ but when you actually look 38(2) at it says “38(2) - subject to regulations 8 of the personal independence payment regulations, a person to whom this regulation applies”…..etc ) & when you read further it’s about medical evidence you must supply at point of claim or review for PIP. So that legislation is for medical evidence, not bank statements! PIP is non means tested they don’t ever demand bank statements. I believe therefore the DWP as misusing PIP legislation & they know no one knows! My opinion therefore is the whole process is unlawful. I’m in the support group & on PIP.

Well done for looking into it. So basically you think the DWP is actually "trying it on" knowing that people will just comply because they know no better? You might very well be right.

I'm on LCWRA and each month I have to complete a self employment earnings report. If I don't then I don't get any universal credit payment. At the foot of the form there is a box that needs ticking otherwise you can't submit the form and it states that when asked we must supply bank statements so that looks like I have made an agreement

@TG0601 so have you had a review? I'm just curious to know what if you have, wwas their reaction to you standing up to them? Kudos for doing that 👏

Yes, I think we are all being hoodwinked. You could always ask them what legislation they are using, see if it’s the same one they told me. I’d suggest everyone asks that question. Current law states the DWP can only access financial data if there’s reasonable grounds to suspect a person of fraud. We arent being investigated for fraud, so there’s the clincher. & more importantly, the new policy being posed by the government giving the powers for banks so pass on financial information to the DWP says the DWP will only be able to see “limited” information. I think this could be the new post office scandal. But not enough people are making complaints & challenging them. I’d say an agreement is not an agreement if the practice is possibly unlawful.
