COUNCIL TAX

Hello ,

I have just had to do the managed migration but only for housing benefit, council tax reduction as my contribution esa is staying the same . I also have transitional protection. I am disabled and so have no work commitments and will find out later this month what they will pay etc. I have a private pension which is all declared and no savings.

I contacted my council as was unsure if needed to reapply for my council tax reduction only to be told that I now have to pay full, less single person discount so it has doubled each month to before when nothing has changed . I don't understand why and all they say is because of the private pension, but I had that before and they were sent all details of it. I have seen a few people saying same thing and end up worse off. I get state pension in September and will have to go through it all again as UC ends and have to apply to council then. It just seems a waste of time swapping for the few months and more work for everyone to do the forms

Council tax reduction isn't something we can advise on because all local Authorities have their own rules. However, I would expect them to recalculate it again once you have your first UC statement because usually it's based on that.

Just so that you're aware, your UC will not only include housing element, it will also include the standard allowance, LCWRA element and any other elements you maybe entitled to.

Your ESA will be deducted in full and the same will apply for your pension. You will only be entitled to Transitional Protection if your UC entitlement is less than your previous benefits.
