It will be different for everyone so you will need to ring them to ask, unless you have a recent letter and you can use that address. Regardless, the quickest way to report this will be to ring them. They don’t often acknowledge letters.

    Hi @Heartman

Whilst Poppys advice is OK you absolutely do NOT have to ring ESA.

Someone people are unable to make or manage phone calls at all whilst others only wish to write so they have a record of exactly what they have told ESA. Include this fact in your letter if its relevant.

To work out which address to write to, use the address on the last letter you had.

    If you don't have a letter with an address on then I've put below a list of all the offices, the only advice I can give pick the best one is;

    • choose which office sound familiar, or
    • matches a text you've had e.g. 'DWP Fit note reminder, send your fit note to Free Post ESA 1, you do not need a stamp' and then use the free post number to get the office from the list below(e.g. Free post 1 is Aberdeen), or
    • Choose an office from the list below based on the nearest office to your address (e.g if you live in Aberdeen then sending your letter to Aberdeen would be reasonable)

Explain in your letter you didn't know which office to write to and ask for it to be forwarded to the right office. Keep a copy. Include your NI number.

Eventually your post should be sent to the correct office. Put a return address on the back too.

Further, save money when sending the letter the DWP have 'Free Post' which means you don't need to buy a stamp. E.g. for Aberdeens office the envelope just has to say 'Freepost DWP ESA 1' on it.

Below is a list of free post addresses for ESA to put on your envelope:

Aberdeen ESA Freepost DWP ESA 1
Barnsley ESA Freepost DWP ESA 38
Basildon ESA Freepost DWP ESA 2
Bathgate ESA Freepost DWP ESA 3
Belfast ESA Freepost DWP ESA 4
Birkenhead ESA Freepost DWP ESA 5
Bury St Edmunds ESA Freepost DWP ESA 7
Caerphilly ESA Freepost DWP ESA 8

Additionally, for peace of mind you can get free 'Proof of Postage' from a post office counter.

You'll need the free post at the top and then the full address underneath with post code (for proof of postage).

Heres an example of what it should look like on the envelope:

    Freepost DWP ESA 1

    ESA Aberdeen

    Mail Handling Site A

    Wolverhampton

    WV98 2AR

The first line is the Free-post (so you don't have to buy a stamp) and then the lines below that are the normal address (needed for proof of postage at the post office counter).

Once you've got proof of postage you're covered if there is an issue with the DWP. A judge will accept that the DWP should have received it an acted up on what your letter said. Even if it takes them a few weeks to scan it on to their system - that's not your problem its the departments own issue. Even if it takes them 6 months to act on your letter, that's their fault not yours. Often they will act on a letter but not reply if there's nothing you need to do.

Alternatively you can take your letter to the nearest job centre plus, you can ask them in person which office to write to, they can look up your record, you can also drop a letter off here and ask for a receipt, they will forward your letter on instead of going to the post office.
