Lasting Power of Attorney & UC

Hi,

Can anyone advise me please?

I wasn't sure where to post this,so I posted it elsewhere on the forum at first.

My parents are planning for the future & they want me to have Power of Attorney over their finances . This would mean that my details would be registered with their bank & I would have a card with representative on it. Would this effect my UC & any future reviews if we went ahead with this?

Thankyou

If you have POA over your parent's finances, their money and bank accounts remain theirs. Your role is to manage it on their behalf, making decisions in their best interests.
POA doesn’t automatically affect UC, but it depends on how the money is handled.

If you're managing the funds for your parents, it shouldn't count as your income. However, if any funds are deposited into your personal account or used for your own expenses, they may be considered income and could affect your UC eligibility.

To avoid issues, it’s a good idea to inform the DWP about your POA role and keep thorough documentation of how finances are managed, which is required anyway when you have POA.

Thankyou MW123 for your advice, it's much appreciated.

I wouldn't be handling my parents finances yet,as they are fully mentally competent, it would be more the fact that I was registered to step in when the time came.

Thank you from me too. I have a power of attorney for my mum in place (but not needed or registered yet).
