New Style ESA (CB)

This has been making me ill for a number of months given the benefit cuts that have been announced.

I understand ESA (IR) is being moved to Universal Credit and ESA (CB) will eventaully end up being this new "Unemployment Insurance"

The new benefit from what I read wont be effective 2028/29 and that is when the WCA will be scrapped.

However I am getting contridicting advice from "Benefits Advisors" on the subject.

Given then I know fully well that my health will only get worse given I have progressive disease that will NEVER improve.

The problem is when I speak to someone I am getting different advice on the subject.

I have been informed from different advisiors very different things.

  1. I have been informed that the new benefit "Unemployment Insurance" will indeed replace ESA(CB) but the time rule element is only applicable to new claimants of this benefit. Nothing has been confirmed what happens with the current claimaints on ESA(CB)/New Style (ESA) that are in the Support Group. Stating as it states on the Equity website "There is no detail on how existing contributory ESA or contribution-based JSA claimants will be protected during the transition but DWP say the end of the indefinite entitlement to cESA will only apply to new claimants. "

https://www.equity.org.uk/advice-and-support/social-security-tax-and-financial-support/what-the-disability-cuts-mean-for-you

or

2. That if I am still on ESA(CB)/New Style ESA I will be switched to the new benefit "Unemployment Insurance" and after 12 months would be kicked off it unless I applied for UC.

or

3. "Unemployment Insurance" commences that they will just simply stop making payments.

Does ANYONE have any ideas what on earth is going to happen to someone in in my postition? As I keep looking ahead and all I see is this sat in front of me!

Or are we still in the "we dont know" what is going to happen here?

I understand the new "Unemployment Insurance" but nothing has been mentioned what happens to people currently on ESA (CB)/New Style ESA.

I assume you will only get help in this country now if you are disabled if you have "NOTHING" and anyone with any savings etc are now getting the plug!!!!!!!

So much for paying my taxes and national insurance all my working life when I could.

Any thoughts would be appreciated here!

I know no alternative but to carry on and see what happens!

This is the forgotten cut but it's a deep one for claimants who may never be eligible for UC. There are a number of us here who will be affected if it applies to existing claimants: @luvpink and @YogiBear However, I don't think they know anymore than I do. It's very unclear in the Green Paper.

So at the moment is still unclear? As I have asked BENEFIT ADVISORS from a variety of sources!

Some are saying they dont know, some are saying that its only applicable to new claimains on the new benefit, some are saying once the change happens you will be on it for a full year and some are saying that soon as it switches you will be kicked off it.

Anyone else on there thoughts here? As think this is sickening to announce something that is half copped and still we are non the wiser!

Nothing has been clarified yet about this. I myself will directly be affected. It's quiet worrying.

Quite worrying? That's the understatement of the day for me.

I should've said very worrying. Like everyone I've written to MP's etc regarding this. It's a stressful time for us all. I don't think the government has grasped how devastating these cuts are going to affect our lives. I wish they would come out and give us more clarification.

The issues I am having is one benefit advisor is saying one thing and another saying something totally different.

Yes the green paper does not answer anything and I question if that was done on purpose.

It seems they are pushing now for all ESA(IR) to get on UC March 2026. Then can assume they will be out with the guns to try and kick all on ESA(CB) off it for the scrapping of WCA in 2028.

For me it is I need to know now what is going to happen as stress like this only makes my condition worse.

If I am going to have to dip into my savings or not!!!!! If so by how much. Nothing is clear!

As I see it existing claims on cb won't be affected unless reassessment takes place same with pip

This is the problem how can ESA(CB) be reassessed if WCA is being scrapped and from what I see the plan was 2028 but suspect they are pushing for this to be sooner!

ESA(IR)/UC makes sense that it will be decided upon PIP after WCA is scrapped.

ESA(CB) makes no sense as the new benefit "Unemployment Insurance" becomes time limited and that the Support Group would no longer exist! So either existing claimants of ESA(CB) will be given the boot (made to apply for UC that many wont get because its Contribution Base) or that they will continue with ESA(CB) as a legacy benefit but it align with ESA(IR)/UC dependant upon your award of PIP. Either way they are gunning for it.

I know there is nothing much I can do about it and the stress of it all is sky high but think it is riduculous after annoucing such MAJOR changes that none of is really wiser on what is happening.

After speaking to "Benefit Advisors" of there intertrepations of the impending changes I am getting mixed answers on the subject.

I suspect anyone with savings are screwed!
