ESA migrating to UC - help with what I'll receive please?

Hello.

I'm over 25, and in the IR ESA support group with two disability elements.

I also receive PIP.

I don't have housing costs.

Pic is attached showing what I receive now.

I have looked at some online calculators and what I'll receive on UC comes up different each time (including TP)

Can someone work out what I'll get on UC please, and break it down as a weekly amount?

Thank you

    Hi,

    Basic UC rate - £400.14
    LCWRA - £423.27

    Standard UC monthly total: £823.41

Monthly Legacy Total (ESA etc): £1,060.15

UC Transitional Protection to match legacy total: £236.74

    UC monthly payment: £1,060.15

This is for a Managed Migration after receiving the letter. The TP and totals will be lower if you chose to migrate before the letter.

UC is never paid weekly. If you request bi-monthly payments then they will be approximately £530 twice a month.

Hello there, looking for some advise info on ESA to UC migration. I have managed to do the claim online relatively easily on 11/4/25, after a recent payment of ESA & my increase in rent/service charges. However, there appears to be sporadic contact about what I’ll call niggles & don’t know why they weren’t explained. (There again, this is DWP!) Firstly in the journal there was a comment that I wouldn’t have to come into to the Jobcentre to prove my identity, they made me a phone appointment to do this & all was good. Then there was an entry saying my Landlord, a city Council had given them a slightly different rent figure, than the one I had given. That was easily resolved & agreed.

I knew my council Landlord would cause some issues, they’re pretty poor on this sort of thing, issuing endless letters that could be dealt with in a better way. I was then called last week by the income team there, as I requested the rent from UC go directly to them, as I don’t trust them not to cause issues over it in the future. That was ok, UC said there was a backlog at the payment end, so first payment might be delayed. Then my Landlord said I was to stop the direct debit I had in place, for the main bulk of service charges that are not covered by H.B or U.C. They needed me to set up a standing order for this & would send details. A week later I hadn’t received anything & of course a letter arrives telling me they’ve cancelled the direct debit! I had to call them of course, more waste of time, they weren’t clear on why I needed a standing order, something to do with UC not accepting this, but this payment is nothing to do with UC?

The last thing is being sent a letter by ESA saying I will be paid new style ESA & it will be deducted from my UC, then a journal entry from UC asking about the ESA.This is messing with my brain, extra stress not needed. The only thing I can find out is, though UC pays some contributions towards your pension, ESA new style pays a higher one, us this correct?

Why have they not explained why there are these added things, as well as completing the claim itself online? I have a fair bit of knowledge & know my way round basic online stuff, but many won’t & will panic.

Thank you so much. That's a relief.

I'd used two online benefits calculators a few days ago, and they both gave different answers - stating approx £20-£30 loss per month.

My next concern is when is best for me to submit the online form 😬

I know I should get a two week run on of ESA, but my last normal ESA payment is on the same day of the final date to submit the claim (27th June)

My mortgage payment comes out 3 days later which wipes my finances heavily. My head is frazzled on when to claim, because also someone said I can cause an overpayment of ESA if I do this wrong.

Sorry but could I ask for your thoughts on this too please?

As your question is about very different matters, could you make a separate post with your queries please?

You'll get seen and have related responses that way.

    Thanks.

On the forum we usually recommend claiming UC the day after an ESA payment.

This helps to ensure the final payment of ESA (known as the run on payment) will be for the full amount.

    @shamrockgirl

Can't help with what your Landlord has been doing.

With regards to New Style ESA, please read through this thread.

Agree 100% that the communication around these things needs a lot of improvement!

I was thinking of submitting my claim on the final day which is when my ESA comes in. So I'd have to do it two weeks before on 14th June then.

Can I check please as I'm trying to get my head around payments..

5 weeks later on 19th July would be my first UC payment be two weeks money? (As we don't get paid for 3 weeks)

Then after that, I get almost 4.5 weeks money on 19th August?

    Thanks

UC is paid one month in arrears.

So each payment date you would get one months worth of Universal Credit.

I'm in the ESA support group and have been for years. I thought with the migration to UC, that ESA ended completely in my situation.

I'm trying to budget in advance and looking at my money going forward.

If I submit my UC claim 14th June (ignoring the ESA run on) when would I receive my first UC payment and for how much please?

Sorry I got you mixed up with the other poster. I've amended my response.

OverlyAnxious has already provided figures for you. Your first UC payment is 5 weeks after you claim. If your payment date ever falls on a weekend or bank holiday, it will be paid on the previous working day.
