Removing an appointee

Hi
My son previously claimed PIP and UC when very unwell a few years ago. He's thankfully fully recovered, his claims stopped in 2023, he's been to uni and can now manage independently.
He needs to claim UC for a few months while he looks for a job. I'm still down as his appointee and we've called numerous departments try to find out how we remove me as his appointee and no one seems to know.
Does there have to be an open claim to remove an appointee? Can we do it over the phone or do we have to write in? (we've been told conflicting things).
He's anxious that if he puts in a UC claim they will insist on dealing with me and not him, and obviously he wants to manage things himself.
What's the best course of action for us please? Do we just put a UC claim in and then ask for me to be removed? Thanks in advance for any advice 🙂

I think there probably needs to be a live claim, Scope has an information page:
