Hi Lilly I'm really sorry to hear that you are struggling thanks for reaching out. “You’re not alone at all — so many people are finding this move from ESA to UC really confusing and stressful. You’re doing the right thing by trying to get help now, even if it feels like no one’s replying. I hear you, and “If you’ve written in your journal and no one has replied within a few days, you’re allowed to call the Universal Credit helpline to follow up.”
📞 UC Helpline:
0800 328 5644 (Mon–Fri, 8am to 6pm)
– Select “existing claim”
– Say you’re waiting for a journal reply and need urgent advice
They can also request a call-back from their case manager if they’re too anxious to hold
“If you were in the ESA Support Group and got a Migration Notice, you should get what’s called ‘transitional protection’ — this means UC will top up your money so you don’t get less than before. You can also ask for an advance if you’re struggling while waiting for your first UC payment.”L
Migration Support Checklist
- Have you received a “Migration Notice” from DWP?
→ If yes: You have 3 months to claim UC from the date on the letter. - Have you started your UC claim yet?
→ If not, go to: - Add a message in your UC journal:
“Hi, I was in the ESA Support Group and I’ve just migrated to UC. I’m very anxious and worried about how this affects my payments. I would like confirmation that I will get LCWRA and transitional protection. Please help.”
- Call the UC helpline if no response in 48 hours
“I wrote in my journal and haven’t had a reply. I need urgent advice about my LCWRA status and financial support.
- Get outside help if needed:
- Citizens Advice Help to Claim: 0800 144 8 444
- Scope’s Disability Energy & Benefits Helpline: scope.org.uk/helpline
Here are some things that might help:
✅ If you were in the ESA Support Group and got a migration letter from the DWP, they should move you onto LCWRA and keep your payment level with something called transitional protection — so you shouldn’t be worse off at first.
✅ If your UC journal isn’t getting a reply, you can call them directly on 0800 328 5644 and ask to speak to your case manager or leave a message that you’re waiting on a response.
✅ You can also message in your journal:
“I was in the ESA Support Group and have migrated to UC. I am very anxious about this and worried about money. Please can someone confirm I will receive LCWRA and transitional protection?”
✅ If you need someone to help you through it, Citizens Advice and Scope both have helplines to guide you step by step.
You’re not doing anything wrong — this process is really hard, and you deserve support. Let me know if you want help writing a message or understanding what to do next 💛
