Welfare Reform Vote Discussion đź’ś

This week has been especially challenging for us all, and we recognise the importance of this evening’s welfare reform vote, and how it impacts our community.
Therefore, we believe it’s important to create a specific discussion for the community to discuss the political vote away from the concessions chat. It’s central to us that we establish a safe space for our members. We appreciate that whilst many may wish to discuss this, others may want to take a little break from it.
So, we ask where possible, we try to keep the discussion around tonight’s vote to this chat please. And please look after yourselves during this difficult time. 💜

Hello.
Got to say Rachel Maskell really owned the the Houses of Parliament with her speech.

Deputy Speaker Nusrat Ghani (Chairman of Ways and Means) is a tough lass, and i think she displays both authority and gravitas!

If as someone has said in another post on the forum
The concession that existing PIP recipients wont be subject to new PIP rules was obviously dropped along with the proposed 4 point rule, but for existing claimants that could be bad news. The Government have said they are going to change the PIP descriptors, points etc and just because they have agreed to 'consult' doesn't mean there wont still be major changes, ultimately they can do what they want, they will make the final decision, but the worst bit is they can now make those changes to PIP WITHOUT bringing it back to be voted on by MP's and therefore it's possible that any changes COULD now apply to existing claimants and MP's wont even get a chance to object !!
Then there is no hope left and I can't cope anymore. I thought it meant we would be safe but now apparently not. I will be left with nothing.

@Amberpearl im the same! I’m so sick of it all. I’ve been staying away from any news etc but today I knew it was going through parliament so I popped on here. I think the governments going to do what the hell they want and change what they want when they want too regardless. I did come to the conclusion that I’m just going to ignore full stop until I’m up for renewal but then though hold on I need to know what I’m up against so I need to check in from time to time. My anxiety is high tonight.

Not surprised it went through in some form. Despite the concessions, the Tories' ultimate goal of demociding the disability community is still on track.

I am utterly disgusted with this government ,I believe that everyone receiving PIP or health part of UC(myself included) now AND in the future is not safe from accidently becoming a 'New Claiment' because of surprise DWP errors. I for one have just recently received a text from DWP saying my PIP review is starting (waiting on form) wonder how many people have received an unexpected early review?
If I lose the only 4 points in my enhanced Daily living ,I'll drop back down to standard ,The money I get from my DL actually goes towards paying for my mobility car ,lose ANY money from my PIP and I'll lose my only accessible mode of transport .
I'm scared for myself and all of us that this decision WILL affect .

It's pretty scary
I've so many different health conditions
I can't afford to lose any money

I am not sure if I am misunderstanding you, but the bill is not law yet. It has to pass a third reading on July 9th, and so we won't know where we stand with it until then. If it's not a money bill then it will also travel into the Lords for a bit, then come back to parliament.
It's true they voted on a bill where the concessions were not written down. And we don't know what the review will throw up for anyone. But I think the government would be very foolish to not enshrine in the bill the promises made today. And that includes consultation with disabled people about the new assessment criteria.
It's not all good news, but I think it's still not quite in the realms of hopelessness yet.

I'm sad, furious and disapointed the bill passed - but I'm not suprised. Not at all. I know a lot of people are scared right now - I am too. I've got my first re-assesment for PIP in 2027 and God knows what the 'rules' will be.
I think ultimately the bill passing will not do Labour any favours and people won't forget. Yes some will still vote for Labour despite being unhappy, but if anyone has a family member who is seriously ill, disabled, are or knows a carer, works in the NHS, social care, GPs….it's going to affect a huge, huge swathe of people, and even if Labour don't care, there are a lot of constitutents that do.
If Labour think they've had a headache getting MPs to vote, this is just the tip of the iceberg for them. They really should remember the Winter Fuel payments - those became law and look where we are now.
I know it feels too little, too late. Please try to rest, do whatever you can to stay calm, connect with others. This isn't over yet and even if it does become law - it's still not the end. This is likely to, and I hope will, haunt the govt for years. They've got a hat trick - pensioners, kids and now the disabled…and that is NOT good track record. People don't put up with this rubbish from Labour.
Please vent here and look after yourselves, don't doom scroll, turn off the news and just unplug. We are all here for each other, please everyone remember that.

Hi just seen the news but not really understanding it much. But got a question, my mum and brother have applied for PIP and they are just waiting for there assessment but with the labour getting the pip bill though, will it affect them in there assessment now, I been reading something about a 4 point rule in one question but still 8 overall, has this been passed and will it affect them now or is it for claiming at the end of 2026. Also will they get the same money as people who are on pip now or has it been reduced or is that for new claims from the end of next year. Thanks

it’s important to note, the bill hasn’t been passed tonight. It’s been passed on to the next stage of the scrutiny process called the third reading. The third reading will take place on July 9th, the speaker will decide whether it can be designated as a money bill, and another vote will take place on the same day with any changes from tonight’s second reading written in.
If it passes as a money bill next week, the Lords can have very little impact on the final bill. The Lords can suggest amendments, but ultimately they are on a one month clock and so the gov can just run it down tossing out all amendments.
If it passes as a normal bill, the Lords can hold it up and engage in ping pong sessions until the government gives way on demanded amendments. So I think the really big decision next week is whether the speaker sides with the government and allows it to pass as a money bill. Or if he allows the Lords greater leeway for scrutiny by refusing its passage as a money bill.

I have my review in 2027 too, I am guessing we will probably get the forms anywhere from a year to a few months before, so probably smack bang in the middle of any changes to the criteria/assessment process. Goodness knows what PIP or any other disability benefit will look like by then, dread to think to be honest. I still believe the Government will do what they always intended to do right from the very first announcement of the green paper. I have yet to see any solid evidence that removing anything will be permanent. We are being duped and so are the MP's that voted for this bill.

This explains why I got a text a couple days ago saying an assessment has been arranged for me on 15th July. My review was originally set for December 2024 but they gave me a 'year' extra. So I wasn't expecting to be contacted until February 2026. Everyone else got a year's break. I got six months. I'll be the first one they kick off. Story of my life! Annoys me they pick on the most vulnerable, and genuine people. I understand the need to dwindle down the claims but when you have a life long illness or disability with no chance of change, they shouldn't put us through this every couple of years! I'm now crapping myself because I have no help, no friends, nobody who can help me through this assessment and I don't know where to turn for help. If I lose my benefits now, I'll be plunged head first into poverty and God knows what will happen after that. My anxiety is through the roof right now. I'm stuck in bed, anxious and panicking….and that phone call isn't for two weeks yet!
Worst of it is, I start a trauma course on 8th July. It's a four week course, once a week. And my second one is 15th at 9:30am, exactly the same time as the assessment for PIP. So I'm gonna get kicked off that course if I can't attend. We just can't win with this Government :(0 -
It is a money bill said at end of parliament but double check that

You're permitted one change of appointment day/time, and when you call the assessment provider to rearrange you can explain you have treatment on Tuesdays this month and ask them to take that into consideration. Good luck 🤞

Unforuntely I agree. I'm so disapointed in so many Labour MPs that they caved so quickly. But again I'm not surprised, but full credit to the MPs that voted against. My Labour MP voted for. She's lost mine and my family's vote forever. I did find it interesting that every other party voted against the bill - all the Greens, all the Lib Dems - all the Conversatives (although I doubt that was alteristic on their part) - every other party minor to major has voted against it.
the one thing that I hope is that this bill gives them so much of a headache - that when it gets passed, so many claiments who are rejected get their PIP via manditory or tribunals that it costs the govt a fortune. Much more than they saved.
A lot of voters aren't going to forgive or forget. When you pick on the sick, disabled, pensioners, children….that's a very, very long list of voters they have betrayed.
