Will claiming carers allowance affect my benefits?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping for some advice please. I claim universal credit lcwra, PIP enhanced daily living and enhanced mobility and new style ESA. When I migrated to UC I received transitional protection for the severe disability premium.
My daughter is 18, lives with me and has an apprenticeship.
Could she claim carers allowance for looking after me whilst still doing her apprenticeship (30 hours) and if so, would this impact any of the benefits I receive?
Thanks, Clare.

Hi @clara_05, It's worth checking whether your daughter would be eligible for carer's allowance considering she's on an apprenticeship. If she's earning over £196 a week or studying as part of it (over 21 hours per week), it's unlikely she'd qualify. The eligibility details are here if you'd like to have a read:

If she is eligible, your PIP and New Style ESA should stay the same as these aren't means tested benefits.

Carer's allowance would normally mean that your severe disability premium would be affected. As you have migrated over to UC this may not be the case and you should be able to keep your transitional protection. But I'm afraid this isn't one of my areas of expertise so I wouldn't like to say for certain that this would be the case. I hope one of our lovely members will correct me if I'm wrong on that one!

But it may be worth speaking to a benefits adviser just to clarify things anyway as they'll be able to look at all your claims as a whole. There's a search tool to find local advisers here if that's something you'd want to do: Turn2Us - AdviceFinder
