£10 Christmas Bonus
Yipeee i have just received my £10 Christmas bonus form the Benefits Agency. The same £10 Christmas bonus i've received for countless years. Granted the £10 Christmas bonus went a little further a decade or two ago go nevertheless £10 is £10 so on balance i'm happy.

I remember collecting this £10 for my grandmother in the mid-late seventies. It had a separate slip in her pension book. The bonus had been going since 1974, I think, and already people were saying it wasn't enough.
I was on means-tested benefits and DLA for many, many years. I scarcely noticed the extra tenner. Now I'm on contribution-based ESA and PIP only and still don't miss the DWP Christmas present.
It's never going to go up to what many people think it ought to be.
I wonder whether the Christmas tenner makes a real difference to many people now and whether it could save a tidy sum if withdrawn.

Hi Zipz, WOW i had no idea the £10 Christmas bonus goes back as far as the 1970's!

Apparently, it was 1972! It was £10 less than two years after decimalisation.

so if it was update it would be around £140 or average earnings £200
seems both unnecessary and pointless to me but maybe the funds should be used for something else more targeted1 -
Somebody suggested £180 if it had been kept in line with inflation. Obviously, it will never be updated.

Personally, I think the £10 is a joke, embarrassing and should be stopped. Put back in the money pot for something more important.

I agree. I haven't donated my DWP tenner but I try to give generously as possible at Christmas and throughout the year either financially or in goods. I'm sure many here could say the same.

I'm wondering how much scrapping a tiny sum for significant numbers would save. Perhaps in DWP terms cutting the seasonal tenner isn't worth the cries of "Scrooge… bah, humbug!"

It would save £150 M.

Fair sum but a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of things. You had a good idea - Charities!

This is to buy yourself some socks and a hat for winter.

Why are some people so ungrateful, baffles me. And even wanting it stopped..£10 will go a long way on super markets own brands.

In fairness, £10 doesn't go far at a charity nowadays either. Everything costs more for them as well as it does for us. At one of the charities I donate to, their suggested donation to provide a Christmas dinner for just one person is £15. Most charities show this type of structure, suggesting how much each of their services really costs.
Obviously they rely on multiple donations to make up the services so technically every little does help. But personally when I donate to charity, I like to provide enough for a realistic practical improvement to another persons situation.

Just a quick query, I appreciate how people are feeling about the £10 but I will be grateful to receive it as it has been a tough year. If we are looking at what the value of the the £10 would be if it had kept pace with inflation or RPI(not CPI), I'm just wondering what benefits from 1972 would be worth now.
