Walking stick recommendations for arthritic hands

Hi I need two sticks to walk. I’ve been diagnosed with arthritis in both hands and I’m finding it difficult to use my sticks. Can anyone recommend any good walking sticks?

Many thanks

    #@Overwheled1,

Hi, Unfortunately, I cannot recommend any type of walking sticks for you but wondered if you might benefit from a walker instead? I have a friend who has both sticks and a walker which she uses depending on her mobility on any given day. I use a stick myself, just one at the moment and I purchased a folding one from my local Pharmacy / Chemist I think it was about £14.00 at the time. The reason I suggested a walker is that you may find it easier to 'lean' on the walker and if you get one with a 'seat' top you have somewhere to perch a moment to 'catch your breath'!

I do have several osteo arthritic joints and my hands are beginning to show tell tale signs of developing the condition, so I appreciate how difficult it can be holding handles on sticks (or undoing things etc..).

Perhaps you can see if there is a mobility shop near you where you may be able to try what they have to see what suits you best. There are a few shops and most Chemists often carry some aids that you may be able to look at and get advise from them? Just a thought.

    Good luck!

Ask yourself, or imagine, if you think you'd be better with a 'normal' walking stick handle, or one that's vertical grip walking pole, or other type. If you google 'different types of walking stick handle' and select images, you'll see half a dozen different types. If you can't envisage what you might need, then as the other post said, a mobility shop to try a few.

Is weight an issue - lightweight ones from eBay (which are collapsible) versus ones with bigger rubberized handles, but are a bit heavier.

Thanks both for your help. I saw a physiotherapist yesterday who said I needed an ergonomic handled stick (they are designed for each hand). They gave me one to try and it’s great. Immediately took the pressure off my thumb joints. I’ve ordered one from Amazon. There are quite a few brands and I couldn’t see much difference. For info in case it helps anyone else the one they gave me was by Trulife (I couldn’t find this) the one I bought was Coopers comfy grip walking stick £15.
