Yes, a rich heritage indeed. But I also have a LOT to apologise for. The treatment of the indigenous Laplanders was and is horrific. And what about an apology for the Vikings? Then there is the invasion of Latin America by the Spaniards. Or how about Spain's ties in World War II to Hitler and Mussolini? And then there's the Spanish Inquisition. And how about Canada's treatment of Native Canadians by slaughtering them on 'settling' Canada, as well as the abuse and murder of indigenous children with mass graves of children popping up now all across Canada? And how about the POW camps Canada set up for Canadians with immigrant backgrounds during WWII? That's just some of what I have to apologise for in my heritage. And I'm far from perfect as an individual too.

But all countries have blood on their hands. And all individuals do too. And everybody knows we've all messed up. It's common knowledge now. I think it's a great place to start, to admit that we've all messed up, that we're all imperfect, that no one has a right to sit on a high horse in moral superiority to anyone.

Our current situation brings to mind Leonard Cohen's song, "Everybody Knows."
