World Cup Kickoff Thread

Indeed and I think this happened at the last World Cup too. I was impressed with them last night though after a rather abject showing against Algeria. Yes they won 3-0 but Algeria might as well have had less numbers on the pitch, they didnβt cause them anywhere near enough problems. At times Argentina played walking football in their own half and Algeria watched and if it wasnβt for Messiβs shots Iβm not sure who else in that team had the initiative to go for goal. So I thought they would encounter big problems against a proper running team in Austria but that didnβt materialise which I found slightly bizarre. Maybe they were filled with awe. Iβm sure another running team like Japan wouldnβt feel inhibited though and would run at Argentina. The jury is still out for me on Argentina
As for Portugal I think theyβre costing themselves this World Cup by continuing to start Ronaldo. They have so many great attacking players that are unable to play free-flowing Cape Verde style football because they seem inclined or micro-managed to slow the game down to Ronaldoβs pace to give him the ball to score. Itβs upsetting in some ways, Iβm sure Portugal could be winning some of these games 6-0 without Ronaldo in that team
I hope Japan win the World Cup :)

Afternoon all,
This evening we have:
6pm (BST): Portugal (@luvpink and @mellybobs) v Uzbekistan (@JanePS)
9pm (BST): England (@Tony60 and @Ainger13) v Ghana (@StoryGuy)
12am (BST): Panama (@Amberpearl) v Croatia (@Rachel_Scope and @tsureshan)
3am (BST): Colombia (@Bluebell21 and @elle19) v DR Congo (@bri1959)
Any predictions?
I'm thinking Portugal, England, Croatia wins and Colombia and DR Congo might have a hard-fought draw.

Go Croatia!! It was tricky to root for them when they were playing Englandπ

portugal, england, croatia and colombia to win, those are my predictions

England. π± π π π₯΅

Messi did that staying forward routine a lot in the last world cup in Qatar as well. It didn't seem to cause them too many problems then though. π

Hello :) I think Portugal win, England win, Croatia win and Colombia win
0 -
That's all they talk about, messi and ronaldo.. They've got to start without them all the time.

And what does he do, just has I was pulling him down. Oh God they'll be talking about him all nightππ
1 -
It wasn't enough to bring him down, he made the most of that. The bigger the player the more moaning they do.

Poor, really poor from England. Why canβt they just run forwards like Japan
0 -
That is what they need to do @yellowpineapple84 I hope the second half is a bit more exciting.

Too slow, too slow. So poor. Iβm so tired of these pre-match interviews where they talk a good game and they just do not deliver. Switched off, canβt watch this. Looking forward to Colombia though, they know how to attack. Panama are pretty adventurous too. England make running forwards in football look difficult and I canβt understand it

England were disappointing, just typical England really.
Colombia are my team so fingers crossed.

Colombia are a good team to have and usually fun to watch too :)

I actually fell asleep during the England game first half, so went to bed. Woke up tto the news of 0-0. Sigh. π
Colombia good though!
I haven't decided whether to watch the second half of the England v Ghana match today or not bother - will I just end up shouting at the telly? π€

I got a little shouty at the telly and had a couple of moments where I actually laughed. I enjoyed the second half though! Much better than the first.

I don't think they were that bad, frustrating and not much cutting edge perhaps, but they were okay apart from when they were defending. π¬ Caught on the break by a pacey counter-attack is exactly how England are getting eliminated when it comes, I reckon.
There's very little incentive for teams who have won their first game to push hard for a win in the second game in this 48-team format, so it doesn't surprise me that it finished as a draw.
Excited for the final group games now though.

Readers, I watched it. The second half of the England match, that is. I agree it was better than the first half, and discovered that it's a lot less stressful watching England play when I already know the score. π

nothing wrong with shouting at the tv
