hi
my sons 15 and in a mainstream school. He’s the only wheelchair user and finds breaktimes really lonely. He doesn’t want to watch his peers play football and spends his breaks on a computer instead. He’s been asking to be home schooled as he doesn’t think he’d be more lonely if he were. He also gets comments daily from kids - lots of ‘dont Run me over’ comments that really annoy him. Does anyone have ideas for what activities or approaches we could try to make school less isolated?

    Hi Lizzy,

Welcome to the community. I hope we can help.

Scope runs workshops on disability for secondary schools, perhaps you could encourage the school to book one? It would hopefully help the other students to understand a bit more about disability and include him more?

When I was at school, there was a room where people could go if they had a disability, were going through a tough time or just found the playground overwhelming. I wonder if your son's school has anything similar? I used it a few times when I was in plaster and enjoyed chatting to people from other year groups I wouldn't have spoken to otherwise. Also, could your son do activities outside school to meet new friends, such as wheelchair or CP football?
