Hi all, bit of a pickle here, im on u.c high rate and pip both lowest,i have a carer who also has another job but fits me in which is great. Recently his asthma has really played up, in and out of hospital, injections 1 a month, loads of other meds, his under the brompton, he has been off work from his full time job for about 4 wks now and has been given another month because as soon as he starts to lower his dose of steroids his peak flow is very low and ends up in hospital. Do you think he would be entitled to pip considering how much time his off from work? Any info would be great. Thanks

    Hi,

PIP isn't awarded because you're unable to work, it's also not awarded based on a diagnosis. It's how those conditions affect your ability to carry out daily activities based on the PIP descriptors. For PIP you also need to have had the condition for at least 3 months and expect it to last at least a further 9 months.

If he's unable to work because of his health then he needs to look at claiming SSP from his employer and this is paid for 28 weeks with a fit note from his GP.

PIP isn't about not being able to work, people claim PIP and work. Have a read of this link, it may give you more understanding of the PIP descriptors and the criteria. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/personal-independence-payment-assessment-guide-for-assessment-providers/pip-assessment-guide-part-2-the-assessment-criteria
