Is anyone listening to Jeremy Vine talking about non binary and transgender people at school?
I don't think I would have dared to mention I had gender issues at school? At my school you were gay if you could spell your own name and people used to set fire to stuff for fun.
I wonder if kids on the whole are more kind or tolerant now?0 -
Good Afternoon everyone!0

Hello @Hannah_Scope0

@66Mustang I would say a lot of children grow up a little quicker than when I remembered being at school. Thinking back, boys found it hilarious to push another boy into the girl's bathroom or changing room. And they did that until they were 15/16. My cousin's 11-year-old said that they don't really find it funny to do that anymore.

That's really interesting @Hannah_Scope
One thing have noticed is when out walking the dog a lot of children and teenagers are often the ones to say "thank you" when we move out of the way for them to pass on their bikes. I'd say about 80% of kids say thanks as opposed to 50% of adults. In my childhood days politeness was almost seen as a weakness, something to be avoided if you didn't want to be picked on.0 -
@66Mustang I find that kids are very polite when out shopping. I once had to run to the bathroom when my IBD was flaring, and I asked a staff member to watch my trolley. They said they don't do that and if I leave it, it'll probably be taken and put back. I just left it as I really needed the bathroom.
A girl about 13/14 had overheard and when I walked back, she had stayed with my trolley. The first thing she said was "I'm sorry I wasn't trying to eavesdrop into your conversation". I was like there is no need to be sorry and thanked her immensely. I was so near finishing shopping too, I wouldn't have started again if I came back, and the trolley wasn't there.0 -
That's lovely @Hannah_Scope
I wonder if social media has something to do with it as being a decent person is quite common theme for discussion now? I may have my thoughts on the value of so-called influencers but have to admit they don't tend to encourage people to go out being hooligans. In my day the equivalent to an influencer was probably someone like a rap star who perhaps made the wrong impression on kids.0 -
@66mustang I think it may do. It's become a 'thing' to call someone out on social media so may be acting as a deterrent?0
-
@OnlyAlex I am so sorry to hear your news. I'm glad you are going to your parents for Christmas. I hope they can be a support for you. We are here if we can help in any way1

Yeah @Hannah_Scope behaviour is often scrutinised to the finest detail on social media, so much so that the victim in an incident is often also questioned as to whether they should have acted differently themselves. Whatever the reason though I am just glad people seem to be a bit "nicer" these days.0
