That's a good long walk @66Mustang, are there good country walks near you?1
-
@Jimm_Scope we do, yes. We tend to do the same walk with the dog, though. We do live in a town but we are lucky to live near the edge, and have nice countryside around us, we can be in the country within a 10 min walk or a 2 min drive.
A funny thing to note is on our walk there are lots of wind turbines, the sort that generate electricity. They look all right IMO but I accept they are a bit of a blemish. Lots of people complained that they spoil the countryside, however I suggested they look (and smell, and sound) nicer than a coal fired power station!!

I honestly like how wind turbines look, I think they look far better than electricity pylons for example (though apparently they're due for a redesign soon?).
I feel like a lot of it is disliking change honestly. As you say, much nicer than coal-fired power plants, acid rain and other issues that come with pollution.0 -
They do look quite cool I think!
I think you are spot on with people disliking change. Also I imagine there is a smidge of what I refer to as NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard).
We have done the walk since before they were put up 15-20 years ago, and we did the walk while they were being put up so sort of watched them go up. We may have carved our names into the concrete foundations of one of the turbines.0 -
I don't mind a little carving here and there as long as it's not a structural damage and it's not a historic building. :P A lot of archaeology and knowledge of past cultures is from graffiti!
Get kinda angry when I hear the stories of people carving their name into the coliseum or stonehenge.
On the topic of NIMBYism, while I do think it's right you have a say in what's going on in your area I do think it's gone too far the other way where a very small % of local people can prevent projects of great benefit. From what I understand a lot of HS2's budget was ballooned by planning having to submit, adapt after complaints, resubmit, adapt after complaints, resubmit etc. etc.
Also my local town has been trying to get 5G towers installed but everytime a plan is submitted to local consideration there's a facebook group of 20-30 people who all file complaints on the first day and it gets pulled. A town of near 20,000 and 20-30 people can prevent a significant infrastructure upgrade.0 -
There is a place we sometimes visit in Yorkshire called Bolton Abbey and there is a place there where people carve their names and the current year into the boulders. They have been doing it for a long time as I remember carvings from the 1800s, maybe even late 1700s. It's really interesting but a bit weird knowing some of them are dead now.
