My LCWRA was backdated. DM said they're recovering it for overpayments, but I was already repaying

Hello everyone. I was recently awarded LCWRA, of which has been backdated. I was very happy to see my award letter in UC Journal, but a few days later I received a letter from Debt Management Bradford to say that they shall recovering nearly all of the monies owed to me, a few thousand, for overpayments. I am absolutely shell shocked. The tax credit overpayments are from 10 years ago, of which I had been paying by Direct Debit until being transferred over to UC. Anyway, deductions are taken from my UC every month so cannot understand why DM have chosen to recover 90% of the monies owed to me?  I have completed a TC846 dispute form and also written to DM to ask for a written statement outlining overpayments, dates, and the reason as to why they have taken my disability payments from me.

    Hi and welcome

This has happened to others I don't kn8wva lot about debt recovery but others will advise

Details of the overpayment will need to come from tax office all dwp will know is the amount they have been instructed to recover

People find the reason for overpayment of tax credits from long time ago is due to incorrect tax returns or not reporting changes

Welcome to the community @BigBlueRose :) Just to let you know, I've moved your post into our UC category and renamed it slightly so that other members can find it more easily.

As Janer1967 said, we have seen this before. I'm not completely clear on the rules regarding using backpayments to cover repayments, but from a couple of things I've read it seems it should work in your favour that you already had a repayment agreement in place.

It could be worth seeking some expert advice on this. You can find advice in your area by using advicelocal.uk
