Hi….I've just received a letter from HMRC saying I can claim online for a tax rebate of several hundred pounds. I am wary about responding online as they want to know my bank sort code and account number. It all looks genuine but has anyone else had this happen to them?

I believe all that can be done with a sort code and account number is to make a deposit, they can't make a withdrawal, so it's pretty safe to give those numbers out.
That said I don't know whether this is legitimate or not.
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.
Good luck.1 -
Hi there
I have read about this somewhere and think it was a scam I don't think that's how you get tax rebate tho I'm not 100% sure
I would either call hmrc but look up the number first un case cinract details on the letter are scam
Or do an Internet search asking if its a scam they are usually listed put in something like hmrc scam letters
Please let us know what you find out0 -
I'd definitely encourage you to get in touch with HMRC directly if you're unsure @exdvr
Here's a list of links on the gov.uk website relating to different types of queries.

Phone them i have just had a tax rebate and that's what I had to do it goes straight into your bank other wise they send a cheque and it takes longer I did it on line and was in my bank within three days0

Something I forgot to add yesterday @exdvr: you can also log into your Government Gateway and see whether you have a notification on there. Are you able to log in?0

Many thanks for all your comments and advice. I did indeed go through the Government Gateway service and am happy to report that a very agreeable sum of money was paid into my bank account this morning. I hope they don't want it back 'cause the missus already has it spent !!!
