We have recently moved into a bungalow and my husband is disabled the kitchen area was not appropriate it was too small and not safe for his mobility therefore we have knocked through into another room to make a longer kitchen to meet his needs.. he has a stick at the mo and sometimes a waking frame would we be covered under the council tax disability criteria for another kitchen we actually still only have one except it was adapted more than double it’s length for his needs thank you

Hi @Silverbirch :) Welcome to the community! Thanks for joining, and for asking your question.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the answer is right now. Have you check on your local council's website to read about eligibility for the reduction? You can get directed to the right page by using this postcode checker tool on the gov.uk website.

Looking at this https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/Disability-related-reduction-in-Council-Tax I suspect you are not eligible but the only way to find out is to ask your local authority.

Thank you after many phone calls to different departments I have applied today under the… we have no fining room or dining table area and I can eat anywhere in the house even with a tray on my knee he can’t he needs the purpose made breakfast bar made for his height level.. plus the units were custom made slimline to ensure he can walk round with his Zimmer or stick and both doors are wheel chair assessable future-proof I also have to ensure and prompt him to eat ( he falls asleep while eating the extended through kitchen meets all these needs for him alone i will let you know how I got on for others future references .

On the council website tori it just says another kitchen sort for purpose of disabled person and that’s what this is but an extended one as a ajoining door would make it a dining room and cause mobility issues and safety as I can’t see him whilst cooking

Any adapted room has to be exclusively for the use of a disabled person.
Predominantly was my take (and I don’t see that the sole kitchen in a house can meet that test).

Hi @Silverbirch I know it's been a while since you've posted, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry no one was able to directly answer your question, please accept our apologies.

You mentioned applying for something after several phone calls? How did that go in the end?

Sorry for the long delay in response due to both my
own and husbands health issues … we funded our own kitchen extention but was later told by OH it would have met the criteria for a disability grant ,, once paid for you can’t apply.. but the council did apply nil fee monthly council tax because it met criteria .. thanks everyone .

Sorry for very late posting but if this helps others…. We were told we would have been eligible for a disability facility grant as my husband needed more safe mobility space but once we funded ourself there would be no grant given but we did receive a grant for a wet room . Because we have at least one room adapted it entitled us to nil contribution council tax which has saved us a lot of money monthly.
