Young 'V' Old

Today it seems to be the 'in' thing for the young to blame the old for having all the things in life they want. Such things as money / houses / jobs / paid holidays / pensions. ECT. All this is bringing the government take more money from the elderly, in tax increases / allowance reductions and ending the triple lock on pensions.
House were cheaper a few decades ago, but the prices were compatible to todays, (or close to it) with the wages earned back then.
Jobs, especially manual were much harder with longer hours with hardly any health and safety rules.
I joined a company pension when I was 18yrs old so that I would be OK now.
Paid holidays had to be fought for, as did many other things.
I know jobs were more plentiful a while ago, but people back then would do anything they had to, to earn money, to feed their kids, working Long hours and doing overtime ECT. I don't think many young people would do the same today.
Whatever happened to working hard?
Is what is going on, going to bring about a Young 'V' Old scenario?

I don’t begrudge anyone what they have worked for. I think if someone has worked and saved all their life they deserve to have nice things in their retirement. :)

I think there is a modern school of thinking where you look for someone else to blame in every area of life and this extends to money. A lot of people don’t take responsibility for their own actions and look to blame someone or something else. A good example is while driving - if someone pulls out in front of you, the modern way is to beep at them as they are in the wrong - the logical thing is to take control of the situation and press the brake pedal!

Houses were cheaper in the old days even considering that wages were lower - I believe the ratio of average property price : average wage has something like doubled but I’m not 100% sure on this.

I think there will always be an old v young...and I think that's how it should be.
With your working hard example maybe the young have a point. I do think there should be a working towards a four day week, and one should be able to work to live not just to survive.

I think we need the enthusiasm of the young with the wisdom of age/ experience for an even balance, myself.

They are talking about raising national insurance contributions to help with social care costs and reforms and that is breaking a manifesto promise and some mps are saying that that would be a tax on the young to support the old and so would be unfair. However, the young have always been taxed to support the old among many other things. When we were young we paid taxes and NIC which paid for the older generations pensions. It’s the way it works!

Breaking the triple lock on pension increases hasn’t yet been confirmed, it’s being mooted. The government leak things in public first to test public opinion. Let’s not roll over too easily please!

As for house prices and earnings, when I was sixteen you could buy a two up two down in the expensive south for around one thousand pounds, a working man could expect around twenty pounds a week wages. Perhaps someone good at maths could work out how things have changed.
