Hi, my 13 year old is diagnosed with autism and ADHD. He currently gets DLA high rate care and low rate mobility, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to get the higher rate mobility to qualify for a car?Getting him out and about is a nightmare as he refuses to use public transport

HI,That will depend on how his conditions affect him because it's not really about a diagnosis. This link may help. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/disability-living-allowance/before-you-claim-dla/claiming-dla/This was taken from the above link.
You’ll also get the higher rate of £62.55 if your child is 3 or over and all the following describe them:
- they have a severe learning disability or other mental impairment that affects their intelligence and how they act with other people
- the impairment results in disruptive and dangerous behaviour, for example someone has to watch over them to stop them hurting themselves or others
- they’re entitled to the highest rate care component.
Before reporting a change of circumstances you should get some expert advice from an agency near you. This way you can explain all his conditions to them and they will tell you if changes should be reported because it's pointless reporting the changes if he doesn't qualify for high rate. For this start here. https://advicelocal.uk/

Hello @Tom_Eva
Welcome to the community, it's good to see you join us.
I hope the above reply has been helpful, and fingers crossed you are able to qualify for the higher rate of DLA for your son.
I just wanted to let you know that I have tweaked the title of your post to make it clearer to other members what your question is, and I have also moved your discussion over to our DLA category.0 -
Hi @Tom_EvaJust to add to the sound advice, you have been provided.
Once you have secured the guidance of a welfare rights advisor.
You should at the same time seek advice about when your child reaches the age of 16 years, this is when they will be invited to make a claim for PIP (this is not far off).
If your child is awarded DLA higher rate mobility this will end automatically on their 16th birthday.
Hope this makes sense. But at least being forewarned, you can take appropriate advice.

That's not quite correct. When a person reaches their 16th birthday they are invited to apply for PIP. If they apply and return the form by the deadline then their DLA continues until a decision's been made on the PIP.

Bit of a brain fog here, was wanting to raise the issue of applying for PIP post 16.
Also, the renewal of Motability car lease term, with less than 12 months award length left.
Hope this makes sense, as I know nothing about claiming DLA for a child, but rely on my experience of PIP, as an adult.1
