PIP and hospital admission.

Hi my son very recently got his PIP award. He has autism and suffers from chronic pilonidal sinus. We are waiting for a slot for theatre. Do I need to tell PIP he's going into hospital. His stay will be 48 hours max. This is his 4th surgery with many more to come unfortunately .

    DWP say you should report all hospital stays

    but a 48 hour stay in hospital does not affect PIP and it will not matter if you do not report it.

    He can receive PIP for up to 28 days in hospital. Days of admission and discharge do not count as days in hospital. If there are repeated stays in hospital and stays that are separated by less than 28 days must be added together.

    It’s only really necessary to report if he is likely to be affected by the 28 day rule.

    If benefit is stopped as a result of these rules the entitlement remains and as soon as DWP are advised he has been discharged payment will be resumed.

    Just to add
    If you do ever have to report a stay in hospital of 28 days or more make clear that you are only reporting it because you know that it may affect payment and that you are NOT reporting a change of circumstance (unless you need to). DWP sometimes decide to tigger a reassessment when a hospital stay is reported and most times that is not appropriate and even if there may be long term health implications it is too soon to tell.
