Is SDP awarded automatically??

Hi my friend lives alone claims esa income based and has just been awarded pip. I understand he is now entitled to sdp was wondering is this something I have to apply for him or will it automatically be added to his esa. Also is it backdatable??

If their PIP includes the daily living part and no one claims Carers Allowance or Carers element of Universal Credit for looking after them then they will be entitled to SDP. It's not automatically paid, they will need to contact ESA to claim it.It can be backdated to the start of the PIP award providing all the crtieria applied to them at the time.
