We have been getting UC for 3 years as I care for my husband who has terminal cancer .
I have just been awarded carers allowance I applied 2 years ago and they lost my claim .
They have given me 2 years backdated a large amount and told me I get £69.70 weekly . I have told UC been awarded carers allowance but not the large amount back pay. Now I'm under no allusion have to give back but surely DWP should just give to UC as I'm no better of .
Will they claim back gradually or stop UC ? It only happened Monday but didnt want to not tell them .

When claiming UC and carers allowance there's no financial gain because it's deducted in full from any UC entitlement. If there was no deduction then you'd be receiving the payment twice. If you were claiming UC for the whole of those 2 years then you will have an overpayment for UC, which will need to be repaid back. The overpayment will be repaid back from future UC payments or you can just arrange to pay it back from the backdated money you received from Carers allowance. For your UC you need to make sure they add the carers element to your maximum entitlement. If you haven't already then you need to report a change of circumstances, report being a carer for at least 35 hours per week and then element will be added.0
