My sick pay has stopped. Am I entitled to ESA and LCWRA? Will I have to go for another medical?

Hi I’m currently off work after having a car accident. I get some universal credit and they also awarded me lwrca. My sick pay has stopped and wondering if I’m entitled to esa and lwrca ? And if so will I have to go for another medical ? Thanks

You can apply for ESA. It will not increase your income because the ESA will be deducted from the UC but you will get Class 1 NI credits instead of Class 3.

You would not be required to have another medical.

Note however than ESA is taxable but UC is not. If your total taxable income for the year (including ESA) would be below your tax free threshold (£12,570) this will not matter.

Great thank so I can apply and hope for the best. My work never told me it was ending and ended nearly a month ago only found out when I checked my payslip. Will they back pay or help while waiting on the decision ? Thanks

You will need form SSP1 from your employer which confirms the date SSP ended. They should have issued it automatically but many employers don’t in which case you will have to chase them. You will also need a Fit Note. ESA can be backdated up to three months (but not before the day after your SSP ended).

As advised any ESA will be deducted from the UC.

Hello and welcome to the community @lisa181818 :)

This is a very supportive and welcoming site to be a part of so I’m hopeful that you’ll find it to be a positive outlet. Feel free to have a look around and get involved wherever you’d like 😊 I have included below a few of the pages I’d recommend having a look through to get used to things:

    • The virtual coffee lounge which is one of our categories, in which we play games and talk about general subjects such as hobbies and interests
    • The recent discussions page, which shows an overview of everything happening across the community
    • The categories page, which shows a full list of discussion groups on the community

If you have any questions at all then don’t hesitate to ask.
