Just found out about this community. I have grandchildren on the spectrum also with ADHD. 3 great grandchildren 2 of whom we have been waiting for referrals to paediatrician for years. Eldest now 9 clearly on the spectrum but undiagnosed and masks it greatly at school. However my granddaughter has to put up with the outbursts when she comes home along with the not sleeping, eating/food issues, verbal and physical abuse.  Middle one now coming up 7 ADHD/spectrum showing at school and clash's with sister. Youngest coming up 4 just do not know if copying (learnt behaviour of the other two or not). She is in a 2 bed flat on the first floor and the girls need rooms of their own but council will not do anything until both the girls have been diagnosed. I feel I am writing a lot of jumbled up words at present but so need some help for my granddaughter. Her physical and mental health is suffering and we seem to be just stuck.

Welcome to the community @lb60 :) There's no need to apologise! It seems like your family has a lot going on at the moment, so I'm glad you felt able to get it off of your chest a bit here.

Just so I'm clear, am I right in thinking that your granddaughter has children, 2 of whom are awaiting assessments for ADHD and autism? Does your granddaughter also have ADHD or autism?

Waiting lists for assessments and support can be extremely frustrating, and many families do struggle while they wait. I know that won't take away any of the frustration, but I hope that it makes you feel a little less alone.

I'm wondering whether you or your granddaughter might find it helpful to engage with one of our family services, such as Parents Connect, Sleep Right, or Navigate.
    Navigate: emotional support for parents

Navigate is a national mentoring service, that provides online emotional support for parents and carers of disabled children who are finding out about their child’s additional needs.
    Parents Connect

Parents Connect is a free 6-week programme, supporting parents and carers of young disabled people. We help parents and carers improve their wellbeing.

    Sleep Right

Sleep Right is a free support service, that helps parents and carers of disabled children to improve their child's sleep.

If your granddaughter is struggling with her own wellbeing, she could try speaking to her GP. They should be able to point her in the right direction.

She could also try referring herself for a needs assessment from her local authority (NHS website). This could help her to access some more support at home.

I've moved your post into our children, parents, and families category. I'd encourage you and your granddaughter to take a look through discussions in this category, as well as in our autism and neuroversity and mental health and wellbeing categories.

You may also find it helpful to get in touch with Family Action, the National Autistic Society (NAS), or the Challenging Behaviour Foundation

When you said that you're looking for some support for your granddaughter, did you have anything in particular in mind?
