Old stuff you still use

After reading @Biblioklept's post about airers I got an idea to make a thread about old stuff people still use regularly.

It doesn't matter if it's an old item or just an old idea. For example I often (though not so much now) carry a hip flask which is quite old fashioned thing to do, however my hip flask is new.

I also like mechanical watches, as opposed to smart watches or quartz (battery) watches.

Up until quite recently we had a black & white TV in the kitchen which worked fine so no reason to get rid of it or upgrade it as my parents only really used it to listen to while in the kitchen rather than watch.

I bought an Elu belt sander over forty years ago and it’s still one of my most useful power tools.
I also have an old sekonda wristwatch which still gives good service.

I have forty five year old jumper which I still wear for working in, it has a few holes but basically it’s still great, in fact I have loads of old things I still use even socks etc! 🤣

My grandparents poker which I believe was hand made and well over 120 years old  I also have their flat iron and stand by the side of my fire although I don't have to use it  :/ might be useful in a power cut  :)

We love old things and antique/flea fares and yes we do use some of the things we buy.
    Hubby loves the old tools.
In the past he brought me a wooden rolling pin, with the striped handles, it was a woolworths piece, i still use it.
I brought myself a hand mixer the one were you turn the handle and the two whisks rotate, i still use that.
I also have my own Mom's meat mincer and yes i still use that. We love the old things and our house does look like an antique/flea market ha ha ornaments every were. x

I have a can opener that I have been using for 45 years, it's still working well....not going blunt or anything.

Until a year ago I used my old Kenwood Chef food mixer.  It was over 40 years old when the motor finally gave up. It had seen a lot of use too.

My children replaced it for me but I don't think the new model is as well made.

Thank you everyone for the interesting posts

Do people generally think old stuff was better made or is it a case of rose-tinted spectacles?

Personally I sometimes look in antique shops and think the old stuff looks slightly imperfect, clearly because it was made by hand, but is much more sturdy and built to last, and a lot more thought seems to have gone into making the items.

I have a pair of Dr Martin boots, which never seem to ware out. Used them for bad weather and work. I tell you, there the best health and safety boots going. I don't ware them very much anymore. Mainly because I find them heavy. I've had them a good 20 years or more.

Still use a wall unit with slidy glass panels in the middle. Would love a sideboard unit but don't have the space! My favourite is GPLAN. Some best built furniture that can outlast most of what is around today.  Also I don't use a smart watch I use a mechanical watch. I love old furniture as well as new. Recently painted an old chest of drawers I got free on 'give your stuff away' day, where I live. I still use and dearly love my hifi separates.

We have a piano stool that used to belong to my Nan, I think it’s about 100+ years old, I use it to sit on when I’m cleaning anything that’s quite low down.

My sister, maybe 40 years ago, bought a table and 4 dining chairs for under £100 new.  She had the chairs reupholstered recently, and the upholsterer commented that she probably wouldn't find chairs of that quality if she bought new.  How much did it cost to reupholster the chairs?  Over £250!  But probably worth it.
