I have suffered with mental illness since I was 17 I am now 47.Its got worse year after year I don't go out I stay in bed all day I have a history of severe self harm.I have severe nightmares..could my own gp diagnose ptsd or would I need to see a specialist

Yes, I'd echo leecal's advice to start with your GP, and go from there. Your GP should be able to refer you to the right service, and let you know what kind of support you can access in the meantime. Is that something you'd feel able to do?
You may also find it helpful to get in touch with a charity like PTSD UK.
