Meet in a public place
It's important to go to a public place when meeting someone in person, especially for the first time. This could be a popular park, cafe, bar, pub, or restaurant, for example.Tell someone where you're going
It's important that you tell someone you trust where you're going, who you're going with, and at what time. Bring your phone with you, if you have one, and make sure you have important numbers saved.Be careful about sharing personal information
It's okay to talk about yourself and your interests, but it's worth considering whether you'd like your date to know where you live or work, for example, in the early stages of a relationship.Plan your transport options beforehand
Make sure that you arrange your own transport so that you're not reliant on your date, and be sure to plan a way you could leave and go home if things were to go wrong.Familiarise yourself with the 'Ask for Angela' scheme
Many venues, including bars and pubs, now use the 'Ask for Angela' initiative. This allows you to discretely ask the venue staff for help with leaving a date if things don't feel right.2
