Subject: Universal Credit Claim Review – What to Expect?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently receiving Limited Capability for Work (LCW) from Universal Credit. Recently, they asked me to provide four months of bank statements, my passport, and a photo of me holding my passport along with a face photo. I submitted everything as requested, and now I have a claim review appointment by phone next week.

I’m a bit unsure about what this means. Has anyone else been through this process?
• Is this a standard check, or should I be worried?
• What usually happens in a claim review appointment?
• Is there anything specific I should prepare?

I’d really appreciate any insights or experiences you can share. Thanks in advance!

Yes don't worry - it's a standard check. Have you bank statements easily accessible when they call.

The call starts with some scripted questions asking if you have property, bonds, shares etc.

They will then pick out some transactions from your account - regular ones or one-off large ones for you to explain.

They aren't at all interested in what you have spent your money on so no need to worry at all about that.

What they are looking for is:

Are you gifting money to anyone in order to keep under capital limits - or are you sending a regular payment to a friend/relative for them to save for you in a hidden account.

Have you undeclared capital (anything over 6k must be declared)

Do you spend long periods outside the UK

For the vast majority of claimants, your call will be short and easy and you will get a message in your journal to say your claim review is complete and no changes.

If your savings are under 6k and you stay in the UK, other than for a couple of weeks annual holiday you will sail through no problem at all.

I have someone who gifts me £40-60 towards food shopping and gas and electric because I’ve been struggling as it has been sent to me same day most weeks will this cause them concern?

Hi @Daphers, are Universal Credit aware of your pension payments? If they're aware of them already, they shouldn't need to question it too much in a review. If not, they may need to have a look at your payments and see if you've been overpaid your Universal Credit, but they should be able to explain how this will work when you speak to them.
