Inheritance whilst on LCW and UC Disregard Property

Hello all,

I am soon to be receiving an inheritance and would plan to purchase the property that I am currently renting privately.

I am also claiming benefits from Universal credit and LCW, as well as housing benefit

Is there a length of time that I can have the money in my account whilst still receiving Universal Credit

Do you know the details of "disregard property"

Thanks for any advice you can offer

Alia

Hey there @Alia81Hunter and welcome to the community.

I'm afraid any inheritance would count as savings, so would count toward your UC total each month.
In Universal Credit (UC), your primary residence (the property you live in) is typically disregarded when calculating your capital. This means its value is not taken into account when determining your UC entitlement. However, there are exceptions, such as if you own another property that is not your main residence, or if you are selling your home and the proceeds are used for a new property.

Currently your situation doesn't meet any of the set property disregards.

It would be possible to inform UC of your plans to purchase your rented property with inheritance to become your permanent home, and ask for a Decision Maker to look at the situation, they can thenn decide if any length of disregard could apply to you having the money.
