Motability car can we retain it now adult disabled son has moved into a carehome

We have had a Motability car for many years to support our profoundly learning disabled non verbal autistic son. At age 27 he has now moved into a carehome 3 months ago. This was a very emotional decision for us but has worked out really well for him and he seems very happy and contented. The home do not want his motability car as they do not have enough carers with driving licences and there is a mini bus. We live only 3 miles away. We visit him twice a week and take him out for the day using the car and we also use it when we take him on family holidays with us. The car comes up for renewal in under a year. Ideally we would like to retain it. Has anyone else been in this situation and is there any advice you can share?

As long as you use the car as intended, and never for anything that doesn't involve him, I don't see why you can't retain the car.
You can always speak to Motability for clarification.

We are going to receive a motability car for transporting our adult son around. We are 80yo. He lives in an annexe adjoining our home, so we see him everyday and he usually accompanies us wherever we go but must we own another car for the very rare occasions when he might not be with one or both of us? For example a Hospital or Doctors appointment for ourselves or a meeting that he has no connection with?

SueJ(above) again. Is there anything we can do to use the car on those rare occasions, like paying Motability for usage as and when or is something else possible? Thankyou

The car always has to be used to transport the disabled person, or be used for their benefit.
Using it for personal use such as your own appointments is never allowed.
Perhaps taxis are a more suitable option on those rare occasions.

I think you can be relaxed about the occasional usage of your sons new car for normal daily family tasks. There is no monitoring of this and the key issue Motability has is with people misusing them for commuting to work etc etc

If someone suspects you are misusing a Motability car, a report can be made to Motability who will investigate.
Doesn't mention the main issue you claim to be the case.
Poster may also be appointee for son, so it would be doubly inappropriate to use his Motability car for personal use.

Also if you are involved in an accident in a Motability car, they will ask you what the journey was for if the eligible person is not in the car. You will not be covered by their insurance if it was a personal journey.

As others have mentioned, it's really important to only use the car for the disabled person it's intended for. Misuse can mean that the car will be taken away and as OverlyAnxious said above, if anything were to happen, it's very unlikely you'd be covered by the insurance.
You may wish to speak to Motability to clarify what's acceptable, but it's never a good idea to go against their contracted terms even for little trips.
