Sugary Drinks

We are being constantly controlled with each passing months and years losing more and more of our own rights and decisions. I have always drank sugar drinks, and never had any of my blood sugars too high or for it to cause concern. I can't stand the zero and non-added sugar versions as I can taste the sweetner in them and its absolutley disgusting. But I have sugar drinks, but don't have alot of other sugar food. So everything is moderation and comes to the owns persons choice.
If anything all this is going to do is squeeze us all further with money, for which were already struggling. It comes down to leaving people to make their own decisions, not making decisions for them.

Tea and coffee refills are still allowed. Black, milk-based, and even sweetened versions aren’t automatically classified as HFSS.
The ban only applies to sugary soft drinks that meet the HFSS threshold. See link below, issued in 2023, but it’s a forward looking document that confirms the 1 October 2025 restrictions.

I'm actually drinking a cherry Pepsi as I'm reading this topic.
It does seem like the government wants more and more control over our lives as time goes on.
Btw I can't tell the difference between natural sugars and sweeteners.

Thanks Catherine. I always try to check out the facts and figures to see whether things like the sugar tax, introduced back in 2018, are actually making a difference. From what I have read, it has done absolutely nothing to control childhood obesity. The rates are still rising, even among children born long after the tax came in.
And now we have this new law banning sugary drink refills, but only in shops over a certain floor size. So apparently you do not get fat if you go to a smaller shop. It feels less about health and more about VAT, when a refill is free, the Treasury misses out.
I am dreading the budget too. We all know it will not be about putting anything back into our purses, just finding new ways to take more out.

What's all this digital id
Government knows us all from the national insurance numbers

NI numbers do identify us ,they have always been used for tax, pensions, and benefits. But they’re basic. They sit in government records and don’t follow us around. No tracking. No linking across systems.
Digital ID is a whole different thing. It’s live, portable, and plugged into everything, from banking and biometrics to travel, health, and government services.
There was a thread on Digital ID last week, worth a look it had some useful points.

I agree that freedom of choice seems to be diminishing quite quickly. People really need to make up their own minds as to how they live their life, as long as it's legal of course. However…..i do understand this would be a touchy subject, an argument of, well if we reduce numbers as re. people being treated on a massively overstretched nhs can only be a good thing etc. It does bother me slightly, say as why should someone who smokes say 40 cigs a day, then gets lung cancer, why should i as a taxpayer help fund their treatment, when they have obviously contributed to their illness?! I don't know, i suppose i can see an argument for both sides to this.🙄

Catherine, I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way. Losing Fifi is heartbreaking, and when everything else feels uncertain, it’s no wonder the fear feels overwhelming. You’ve been fighting so hard to stay steady, please be gentle with yourself today.
And yes, the way the Labour government is selling Digital ID as “keeping borders safe” is shameful. It has nothing to do with immigration. Even if the borders were closed and not a single immigrant entered the country, they’d still be rolling it out. That’s just a cover story.
This is about giving the state deeper access to our personal lives, tracking, linking, and centralising information that used to stay separate and private.
Honestly, I think it’s another one of their schemes that will end up shelved once the public sees through it. Nearly three million have signed the petition already.
