DLA date - is this correct or an error?
Hello, my child currently gets middle rate DLA for care only and has been getting it for a few years. I have just had a letter telling me about the increase from April but it is showing that they will be getting DLA until October 2nd 2027, however, they turn 16 on October 2nd 2026 (this year). Is this correct with DLA or is this an error? I am confused about when it is supposed to stop and if it automatically becomes PIP or what happens? I have copies of all the forms I sent off and has their correct birthdate in 2010.

When they turn 16 they will be invited to apply for PIP, if they do not put in an application by the deadline date (usually a month or so after 16th birthday) their DLA will stop immediately, if they do make a claim for PIP their DLA will continue up until 17th birthday (or until a decision has been made on their PIP claim, whichever happens sooner)

Hi @kayleigh66 and a warm welcome to the community from me!
I see Biblioklept has already given some good information and advice so I won't add too much more information but I just want to drop this post about changing from DLA to PIP at 16 that you may find helpful😊
It's lovely to have you here and I hope you enjoy your time on the community!1 -
Thanks for the replies. So, to clarify there is no error on the letter and the date of my child's 17th birthday is correct as we will be expected to apply for PIP and I don't need to do anything except to apply for PIP once they turn 16?

Also, can I start applying for PIP before they turn 16 or do I need to wait? I don't want to lose their benefits or carers allowance.

You need to wait, they'll send you a letter asking if they need an appointee about 3-6 months before their 16th birthday and then when they turn 16 they will send you a PIP application form. If you apply separate to this it could mean you lose the DLA as it wouldn't be a transition x

Yes @kayleigh66, that's correct as there's no error on the letter and you will need to wait until they turn 16 until you can apply for PIP😊
