Cerebral Palsy Awareness Session in School

The CP Network recently received a request from Pencoed Comprehensive School, near Bridgend in South Wales, to deliver an awareness session on cerebral palsy and ableism.

As part of a social studies competition in Religious Studies, the class are participating in a project where they research and engage with social issues. They present their ideas, and the winning class donate a £1000 grant to their chosen charity. The class, through their research, chose Scope. They expressed how important it is to create a fairer society for disabled people, as well as trying to end institutional ableism.

Last Thursday, I visited the school and spoke to around 20 pupils. It was a great session. The class had prepared questions and were interested in my lived experiences and Scope’s work.

I received this feedback from their teacher. “Thanks so much for yesterday, the pupils loved it and were talking about you again today! I really think they learnt a lot about CP and also how working with disabled people, as opposed to for them, is important! Hearing your lived experiences really engaged them and got them thinking, so thank you”.
