Pension credit guarantee credit

Looking for advice please? Is there a limit to your savings if you are in receipt of pension credit guarantee credit that would affect your housing benefit entitlement? I have read that the usual £16000 limit does not apply if you are in receipt of the guarantee credit. I get this because I get daily living enhanced care and standard mobility and live alone. Not because my pension is below the living standard amount. Thank you

You are right, the £16,000 savings limit does not apply when receiving guaranteed pension credit.

thank you so much for your prompt response. Is it correct that you can get £82 extra a week added onto your pension credit amount if you get the severe disability premium. My award letter says I get the pension credit guarantee credit and the amount but nothing about disability premium. I always understood I was eligible for this but did not know there was an extra amount of £82?

Hi @destinymoon - as it seems you receive the full state pension, then it's likely that your Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit) already includes what's called the Severe Disability Addition of up to £82.90 a week as you receive the daily living component of PIP/ADP & live alone.

If you want to find out more I suggest contacting AgeUK as they should be able to help: 0800 678 1602 8am - 7pm every day.

    They also say here: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/money-legal/benefits-entitlements/housing-benefit/

''If you get the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, your income and savings aren't taken into account – so you may get your rent paid in full by Housing Benefit.''

I am to be left a share in a property and the value would be approx £50,000 maximum. I think this would obviously affect my pension credit guarantee credit and housing benefit and council tax benefits. The other issue I am really concerned about is will it affect my council tenancy? I have a secure tenancy have been for 23 years? Will I be able to remain in my council property? It would not be enough money for me to purchase a property. Very concerned.

    Hi,

Generally you will be able to stay in a council house even if your savings increase in the future.

Councils are allowed to make their own rules though, so it would be worth double checking your tenancy agreement just to make sure.

just a follow on from this discussion. I understand if I am on pension credit guarantee then there is no saving limit in order to retain housing benefit etc. I am reading that once over the £16000 limit, every extra £1000 is considered income therefore reducing the pension credit by £2 every 1000.
