Overweight people
Twice this week an overweight person has overflowed into my space impacting my paid for seating meaning im squished up against a window or sitting on half a seat
I always book specific seats in trains and at concerts because I need to sit and cant risk not having a seat but almost every time now Im squished up and lose half my seat because someone is too big for their seat next to me meaning they overflow into mine
Todays train journey I swear this guy had his whole seat, half of mine and half of the poor lass next to the window the other side of him
I had to balance into the aisle and am in a lot of pain now as a result
I empathise with being overweight ive been there but surely at some point its just not fair and they should book two seats or something because it means other people arent getting the service they pay for
Whats the general opinion here?

Yes, I think fat people, loud people and stinky people should all be forced by law to book more space. And people who move a lot in their seats. And people who have their phone on speaker. Why not add another law to the short list of laws in the world?
Also, I'm sorry you had to suffer. I really am.

Suffer lol

I don't like man-spreading, either!
You have the same choices we all do; wait for the person to disembark; find another seat; find another means of transport.

I can't help 'man spreading', but i have a belt i use to keep my legs together. I also bring my own seat!

You're excused.

Hi everyone - appreciate this is a really sensitive topic. Just a reminder… please be kind. We don't always understand what others are experiencing.
On a personal note, I know first hand people who suffer from medical conditions that impact their weight. Also people who have more challenging metabolisms than others - it's not easy. And people who's MH really impacts their ability to function as society often expects. 💜

Thank you, Holly.
And people who have eating disorders.

Eating better and exercising enough can be very hard to impossible for some people no matter how much they try.

Sat in a powerchair doesn't aid slimming, I can attest to that.
I have heard people make snide remarks about getting a scooter or chair ' just for being fat', when the using of said mobility aids has caused the weight gain.

You..Are body shaming people and your post doesn't deserve to be on here and scope should have removed your remarks😡

When I was still going out, I found this really difficult, but rather than overweight people it was the plain inconsiderate people that bothered me.
The 'man spreaders', and the ones who would spread out across a whole table or place their bags on your feet, or lean, or hold onto you in crowded trains. All sorts of people encroach on others' spaces, some can't help it (lets face it airplan and train seats are far too small!) and others, the ones that really bother me, are just plain rude
To add another perspective; my mum was severely obese and she hated going out because she hated taking up space. She was very concious of being (what she considered) an 'inconvenience' and it meant she went out less and less, which only contributed to her weight.
The last flight she ever went on she actually purchased two plane tickets, not for her comfort but as she was conscious of the judgement and didn't want to upset anyone. The worst part was the airline had oversold the flight so she ended up with someone next to her, in a seat she had also paid for, complaining the whole time that she was taking up 'their' space. She had such a low sense of self-entitlement that she didn't say a word, to the airline or the other passenger - who spent the whole flight huffing and shoving her side.

I think StarryEyed doesn't actually agree with those attitudes and was being sarcastic.

On the one hand it seems fair to make someone overweight pay for two seats if they'll end up taking up 1 and a half to two seats as it means there's less room for other people, but on the other hand this would be quite embarrassing for the overweight person and could fill them with shame.
It's a dilemma that I think is worth discussing.

Or how about if the people who get crushed by an overweight person sitting next to them and there's no other spare seats for them to go to get a discount on their train/plane/coach ticket?

I'm sorry to offend anyone, but it was intentional in addressing the OP. I thought that was very obvious. I spoke in hyperbole, using the same offensive logic as the OP to make the point that we are all in eachother's space in many ways, as in the examples I gave. With lived experience, I am acutely aware of how brutal people have been, are and will be with other people - including me. Shamelessly, brutally, offensively, blatantly and typically INACCURATELY judgemental. Not everyone. But there are days it feels like everyone.
So I hope you can see my point now, and if not, well, go to the lineup with all the people who find fault with me. It's a really, really long line. I'm so sick and tired of spending my whole life explaining myself and defending myself. Despite all the time and energy, I've gotten nowhere. It's a useless, worthless, pointless waste of a life. And exhausting, totally exhausting.
End of rant.

To be fair I read as @StarryEyed was like @Ross1975 says … it was a boohoo sucks to be you reply. To which I agree
I bet the larger person enjoys the situation far less than the person next to them, who knows what they're feeling inside. May be a smile on their face but maybe dying inside ? It takes nothing to be kind and put the feelings of others before our own sometimes. Empathy is what can define us
It's unfortunate the OP was in pain later and I feel for them but the larger person didn't wake up that day and think … I know what I can do today …

If I got the message wrong, then I apologise. Never gave it a thought you were wording like that…🤐

That's okay. Hopefully I wasn't too harsh with you. My apologies if I was.🙏🏼❤️

It's no problem, I should think before I leap in to the keyboard. Maybe it's time to retire from here for a bit.

Oh please don't go on my account. This cancel culture we live in makes miscommunication even worse because we just avoid communicating and therefore get even worse at communicating. I would much rather you get upset with me and I get upset with you so we can explain ourselves and learn to communicate so we can talk about stuff. Just sweeping things under the rug and/or running away doesn't solve a thing. And I think that avoidance is at the crux of soooo many problems, from our own inner problems, to problems with the family, with community, all the way up to internationally. We've lost the ability to communicate because it's so uncomfortable. But avoidance isn't the solution. I've tried avoidance on every level and it doesn't work. I've also tried communicating. I haven't gotten anywhere, but I know part of me can rest easily every night until my last breath knowing that I tried.
I'm so sorry to be screaming so loudly today. My life is falling apart. Again.
And I need you in your Humour thread. We all do.
