Watches?

Does anyone still use a watch and what kind of watch do you use?

I'm trying to use my phone less to cut back on wasted doom-scrolling time, but I like being able to easily see the time (and date!) which a phone is convenient for.

This may sound stupid but are watches still a thing? I've never owned unless we cound a ninja turtles one as a kid πŸ˜„

Do they irritate your arm?

Would an Apple watch be overkill? I figure if I sync it to my phone I'll know if I get messages/calls without carrying my phone on me which will give me even less excuse.

Watches are definitely still a thing! I know quite a few people who have watches and wear them every day. Both standard, and the new apple watch styles.

I have changed to a fitbit which works similarly to an apple watch. It doesn't look as pretty as a normal watch I don't think, but it's helped me to increase better healthy habits like trying to get my steps in each day.

Are you considering getting one? You could always look at a cheap one first to try, see if it irritates you.

I still love watches. I got one for Xmas with Roman numerals, and a little silver ball instead of the hands, but it kind of stopped working after a couple of months, and i can't get it to work again properly…..πŸ˜•

I had an apple watch which I wore for a few years but it did look quite big and bulky but found it was really helpful for tracking exercises and sleep @Mr_Shoes_Tied so it felt like good value for money.

That's a shame, do you have a Timpson near you @Starman? They may be able to repair it for you😊

Yes. I use a watch. My CP affects my hands more than anything else so I couldn’t use a smartwatch even if I wanted to. Mine is a basic sekonda wristwatch. It has a 2nd hand but no date. I know you can get them with the date too. I like a basic, traditional watch, but there are more stylish ones

I've gone to the FitBit from conventional watches. Function over aesthetics

… although we have some arguments when it tells me to move … I would if I could you insensitive piece of plastic and silicone πŸ˜›

Doesn't an Apple watch sort of defeat the object of not using your phone?

I used to wear a conventional analogue watch every day until covid lockdown. Haven't worn one at all since then. I do have a weird ability of being able to estimate the time pretty well, but can also see a digital clock from the 3 places I'm likely to be (bed, chair or toilet!).

Mine does the steps reminder. Can be very annoying and a source of frustration when I'm trying to relax. Always makes me feel guilty. πŸ˜‚

I think you can turn that off though, or at least reduce the step number.

I have the same issue @WelshBlue and @Holly_Scope! I know I can turn it off but maybe one day it'll actually motivate me so I'll leave it for now πŸ˜†

I'm not really sure to be honest, i tried to mend it myself, but put it in a drawer and forgot about it, until i saw this Watches post! It is a nice watch so i might try and get it repaired. πŸ˜€

I bought a Fitbit from Argos with my "Christmas bonus" from work in 2023, and then I sold it on eBay about 7 months later.

And then about 2 years ago I got a Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 on contract with O2, and the damn thing almost never worked… I took it back several times and the company did 2 things, chuff all and nowt.

Possibly but I'm hoping I'll just use it for time and notifications, rather than games and social media all day. I'd be embarrassed to admit my daily screentime!

I recently started using an Apple Watch and phone. I dont carry a phone as need my hands free for walking. I can tell you when the phone is away from the watch it is on 4g as I have a contract with Vodafone. Everything works fine except whatscrap on the watch. My watch shares information with my health team as it is set that way and they can contact me if needed. I never look at the information displayed in health and the watch is for crash or fall detection and for me to ask for help.

The fall detection works very well and all of my information is programmed in set up.

Battery life is not great on Apple Watches.

desktop watch and phone charger make life easier as they reduce wires.

    still have my normal watch.

I have 4 clocks in my one bedroomed bungalow as well as my 4 watches which all tick, not synchronised at all. When my sister used to stay she'd go mad saying how can you sleep with all this ticking everywhere πŸ˜‚ and she'd put some of my clocks outside under a pilllow πŸ™„πŸ˜¬πŸ€£. I had 8 in my two bedroom cottage beforehand but got rid of some. I find the ticking reassuring.

I wouldn't touch a smart watch as far as I could throw it, I have normal green hand watch on at the moment. But I do like my watches and have all different kinds.

I love a traditional watch but I wanted a smart watch to count my steps and get phone notifications on. I got one that looks as close to a traditional watch as possible, aside from the screen. So far it's great! It has a lot of functions that I haven't really looked into but I discovered it has a little fighter plane game which is very random πŸ˜†

I never liked wearing a watch because of my nickel allergy and because it was in the way/I'm a bit clumsy and damage things!

@WhatThe my mum has a nickel allergy, so the small quantity of jewellery she does have is gold… it did cross my mind, though, that maybe she just made that up to tell my dad πŸ˜†

My first watch was a Casio calculator watch - at school in the mid 70's - I was (falsely) accused of cheating in my maths O'level exam using it (Calculators were not allowed in Maths Exams in the 70's)….I did pass my Maths O'level at age 14 with a grade A !
