Beat the heat - Tips on staying cool

Me too @Ross1975! I quite like the white noise from it too.
I've got a continuous spray bottle that I usually use for my hair. It sprays out a nice fine mist and I've found if I give myself a good spritz while in front of the fan, that can give an extra little cooling boost as it evaporates. Recommend that one!

Me too, need to plug it back in actually, I unplugged it this morning to put my phone on charge.

I think I'll buy a big water melon the next time I go shopping. Being how hot it is the idea of eating some ice cold watermelon right now is very appealing. I could put it in the fridge, once it's as cold as it will get I could cut off some slices and put them in a dish/on a plate in the freezer for maybe around 10 mins before eating them. 😋

Not true. Houses aren’t airtight vacuum flasks, air constantly cycles through door gaps, extraction vents, and building seams.
If it's windy outside, opening just one window is more than enough to force air through the house. Opening two windows when it's boiling hot outside just accelerates how fast you turn your home into an oven.

You mean like the vent in the room with the coal fire, that worked in conjunction with the chimney to draw the fire? We have known about it for centuries.

Thanks matey, but I already know how to keep myself cool so I don't need to read it.
Have you made sure that you've been drinking plenty of fluids? As it's been very hot these last several days.

I also struggle during hot spells. Currently with 2 large pedestal fans and my portable aircon unit on max the temp inside my living room is 33.7 degrees. Without my aircon unit it would be somewhere north of 36 degrees. My Meaco portable aircon unit purchased from Amazon 2/3 years ago has literally been a life saver for me and as best as i can figure out its costing somewhere in the region of 25p to 30p per hour to run.

In some diseases, a small excess of fluid in the body, even despite the heat, can be harmful.

These are interesting.

I currently have 13 windows open in the flat alongside a cooling fan on 🥵 I feel for everyone in France, Spain and Italy being impacted by the dreadful wildfires. Alongside those near my hometown of Oldham, above Dovestones Reservoir. Problem with places like Dovestones is that like many similar sites you have people taking those cheap disposable BBQ’s and that is where the trouble starts.
This is the severity of the impact of climate change is having this summer, large swathes of country are at high risk of wildfires.

My house is so cool.I think the mice that I had ate away at all the insulation during the winter because it was absolutely Freezing then even with the heating on.Now we are experiencing this warm weather. The best place to be is at home.I had a workman come in.the other day and he thought I had air conditioning. So im now getting concerned about winter again

It could be a good idea to start getting some insulation sorted soon @Jane315STARX so that the cold weather doesn't affect you too badly. Are you living in rented accommodation?

We aren't allowed to be led by science, some bloke on social media who has 'common sense', they're obviously our best hope! 🙄

Yes rented and I have loft insulation

Have you spoken to your landlord about the issues with the insulation @Jane315STARX?

problem we have is our homes are built to keep the heat in. My flat was built in the 70s, I found the energy certificate on the government website. If it gets Hot, then 13 windows are opened and a fan goes on. I then end up sitting in a pair of shorts and a vest running the white flag up.
People say that there is no such thing as Global Warming are the same that say the Earth is Flat.
Global warming is transforming the UK through hotter summers, warmer and wetter winters, and more frequent extreme weather. Average temperatures have risen by roughly 0.25°C per decade since the 1980s, pushing historical temperature extremes—including highs past 40°C—into a dangerous new normal that strains public health, infrastructure, and nature. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]Temperature and Health
- Intense heatwaves: Summers are hotter and longer, causing a sharp rise in heat-related illnesses and deaths.
- Disrupted services: High temperatures strain the NHS, warp railway tracks, and cause power or tech failures.
- Fewer frosts: Milder winters fail to kill off crop pests and disease-carrying bugs.
Water and Weather Extremes
- Heavy rainfall: Warmer air holds more moisture, leading to severe downpours and flash floods.
- Droughts and dry soils: Summers are increasingly dry, creating water scarcity, scorched farmland, and wildfire risks.
- Sea level rise: Surrounding seas are higher and warmer, increasing coastal erosion and the risk of severe coastal flooding during storms
Food and Nature- Farming pressures:
- Erratic rainfall and dry spells hurt crop yields and livestock grass growth, driving up food costs.
- Wildlife decline: Marine heatwaves and shifting ecosystems harm native species, such as seabid populations
West Nile Virus has been detected in the country in Mosquitos in Nottinghamshire, the first ever such reported case.
More and more viruses and bugs that are often found overseas, that haven’t been seen in the uk will become part of the norm in the UK as the days, months and years go on.

We're well and truly back in the heatwave down here!
I've just put my hot water bottle back in the freezer so it'll be solid by the time I go to bed, has anybody tried that? It's been a game changer for me0 -
Dull with me in Angus, but a quick check of BBC Weather assures me it is 23C.
