FIFA / Trump / Red card

What are we all thinking about this?

For those who don't know, red card in a match means an automatic suspension from the next game. One of America's top strikers got a red card and Trump called up the head of Fifa and Fifa have since announced they are allowing him to play the next match anyway

I think it's very naughty behaviour to even try that! And I'm not sure how FIFA can justify the decision.

If FIFA are going to do this for America the same should apply for every player in the world cup who gets a red card and they should be allowed to play the next match.

They have suspended the punishment for 1 year, it hasn't been rescinded. Still ridiculous though!

What will the craven Infantino do if Trump demands the USA win the tournament? 🤔

The red card hasn't been rescinded, just suspended for one year. Trump doesn't even know what a red card is i bet, just has to upstage everyone. Disgraceful, I think it stinks.

More reason for me to Boycott the world cup.

I think this is very sneaky and unfair! Surely if they let one player despite having a red card play, they should let other players who've been carded play?

I don't expect any less from Trump and ridiculous from FIFA … it screams corruption when they're trying to still get over Sepp Blatter and his many charms

I only saw a snippet of the original red card … seemed harsh, no intent, looking at the ball, just 2 players coming together

The Red Devils have put it to bed … just hope they don't end up in some CIA camp on trumped up charges 😋

I won't pretend to know a lot about this but isn't complaining about ref decisions just part of football? Even if the red was too harsh, it's ridiculous for a president to intervene in this way. He made a joke out of the US team and FIFA agreeing lost a lot of the trust people have in the game.

I think Belgium were probably a stronger team anyway but the US team lost so much support and faced a few days of bad feelings and criticism ahead of their game which would have impacted their performance.

With regards to penalties, calll them boiled eggs for a minute - A soft boiled egg, or a hard boiled egg, both are still boiled eggs.

A senior referee used that analogy once, when pundits were complaining about a 'soft' penalty.

We're all equal, but some are more equal than others. Pffff.

I can't help but think it is always about the powers that be. Why even play a game with certain rules? Why not put people out there in a field, no matter how many players on each side, no matter if they have a ball or two or a tennis racket and let them get on with it. First round 20 min, the next 35 for no apparent reason. Oh, let's add a third half at random where they sit down and check their bingo card.

Should never have been suspended and I think it's eroded a lot of goodwill that the US had earned as an enthusiastic host. They would have lost against Belgium either way, but that's a little different to being actively rooted against because there's now the stench of corruption lingering over your team.
