I've tried looking for this on their website (signed in, obviously) and I can't see it? I'm very nervous now.

That's interesting @worried33, thanks for sharing. Do they say how they've arrived at this theory?

I got the pip extension letter in the post today. Recap: got pip in 2019. was given basic living only. got a 4 year award.

then, in the review (2024 - was delayed a bit probably due to covid), i was award enhanced living and basic mobility, as my condition had deteriorated by then.

was expecting review in 2027 - and awaiting a review form any week now, but i got the extended pip award letter instead. have been given 3 extra years.

Hi there, my initial PIP review was carried out just before last Christmas and got the letter in February with an extension of 2 years and review next year. Then last week I got the letter from DWP about the extension until 2031.

“We have changed how often we review some Personal
Independence Payment (PIP) awards. This means we have
    extended your PIP award.

Your current PIP award has been extended to
    16 December 2031.
You do not need to do anything. We will contact you again after
16 December 2030 to see if your needs have changed and if you
are getting the right amount of PIP.
We may extend the end date of your PIP award again.”
All of my conditions just getting worse and just got diagnosed with fibromyalgia on top of a spine injury, peripheral neuropathy, stage 4 endometriosis and kidney issues😅 So it ain’t gonna get better or healed unfortunately. I thought well maybe my GP talked to them, I know they sometimes contact healthcare professionals.
But then today I received the message that I have something added to my Universal Credit “To-do-list”, so immediately logged in and it was about providing documents to prove my identity and to see if I spent time outside the UK which I didn’t. I’m not even able to travel alone anymore, now both hands in splints, I can’t even use public transport to get around anymore. And the Enhanced team will also call me next week. They did not asked for medical paperwork so this shouldn’t be about a medical assessment I think.

    Hope this comment helps you💗

From what I can interpret, its largely speculation based on the public information to hand, they have made some freedom of information requests to the DWP to try and get some facts.

One thing I missed and I cannot remember if this was in the member only section or not, is they trying to free WCA capacity via reduction of PIP assessments as well.

Its at the bottom of a news article, if you not logged in or not a member it will say extra information available if you a member, if you a member the article changes to a longer more detailed one.

I think in most cases what they are doing is increasing the length of your award to a 6 years. If you already had a 6 year award or more you probably won't get an extension. So say you had a 3 year award expiring 2027, it's extended to 2030. Those with days or a week on of increases, you probably were already on a 6 year award, so they've just lined up the dates.

Hi Has anyone had a silly 'couple of days ' extension via a letter then checked the gov.uk one log in site and got years added? TIA

I'm not sure that's correct either. My own award was already well over 6 years.

Hi, I have an initial award of 3.5 years and have no extension, I haven’t seen many if any with initial awards getting extended beyond 3-4 years could this be why mine hasn’t then extended? This is my theory anyway.

Do you mean yours is a first award without having a review so far?

I've seen plenty of award extensions to more than 4 years. But I haven't been taking notice of whether those people had previously been reviewed or not.

The extension letters are still going out, so there's still time for you to get one.

    October '22 to February '26

Review started June '25 completed October '25, given until October '28.

Extension letter states until October '31. They will contact me to see if my needs have changed in October '30.

Lower care, higher mobility. My needs will have changed by '30/31. But, I'm relieved to have the extension. I feel mine should be 10 yearly anyway, especially as DLA was a lifetime award after a medical.

yes, that’s what I mean sorry. I could be wrong but what I have seen and I have seen a lot of extensions is that people who have a first award haven’t gone past 4 years

I got an extension letter through yesterday. Mine was due to end at the end of 2029, but they've extended it to the end of 2031.

Mine was a 4 year award, extended to 6 years now.

    For those interested;

Had my normal reassessment review last year, was awarded Standard Daily Living for another 4 years from Nov'25 to Nov'29. Got a letter on Friday adding 2 years and 1 week to my award, now awarded to Dec'31.

That theory is plain wrong. PIP was, and always will be, based on how your disability or condition actually affects your daily life—hence the name Personal Independence Payment.

Moving to a purely diagnosis-based system completely ignores the reality of how disabilities work. Having a diagnosis—whether that’s being autistic, experiencing psychosis or schizophrenia, having a hernia, or missing a limb—is only the starting point.

The way any condition affects an individual varies wildly depending on their lifestyle, personality, and specific personal circumstances. Two people with the exact same diagnosis can have completely different daily challenges and support needs. Because of this, a medical diagnosis is not a simple "on/off switch" for benefit eligibility, and it never will be. The assessment of how a condition personally affects you is the entire foundation of what PIP is designed to measure.

I am a registered user in B&W, theories fly in there about all. Never seen that article, but it is what it is, noise. If gov could pull that, they would have done so. In fact their recent reports state diagnosis are bought and offered too easy, so its the other way around really.
