I need help applying for severe disabilty premium

Hi Colin63, as Poppy explains, the severe disability premium has several criteria. In addition, it is part of other benefits (for example, income-related employment and support allowance, income support, income-based jobseeker's allowance, housing benefit or pension credit).

It doesn't exist by itself.

The criteria are very specific, including 'living alone' (if a claimant does live with other people, their situation needs to be checked too, as sometimes it is still possible to qualify).

So without more information I'm afraid we can't advise you. Maybe you could let us know:

• what income-based benefits your brother-in-law is currently claiming (this could be income-related ESA, income support, income-based JSA, housing benefit or pension credit)
• whether he gets PIP, DLA or attendance allowance, and if so, what rate of these benefits, and which components in the case of PIP & DLA
• who he lives with, and if he doesn't live alone, more details about who he lives with (eg age, relationship to your brother-in-law, and what benefits the other people in the household are claiming)
• finally, whether anyone receives carer's allowance because of caring for your brother.
