Where can a medical report come from?

I understand that it's important to give the DWP medical reports, when applying for PIP, as they use them to determine what points you may get.  My question is, are there any restrictions on where these medical reports come from?  To give an example:

Say I go to my NHS GP, and ask to be referred to see a private specialist/consultant.  So, I pay to see this person, and they write up their report, and send it back to my GP.  Can I use this report for the DWP/PIP, even though it wasn't written by anyone on the NHS?

    Hello, yes as long as they have a recognised professional qualification for the occupation they are practicing in then if the report supports your disability, condition and abilities in relation to the PIP descriptors then the more medical evidence you gave to send the better. Keep copies of all you send in case they get lost and for future use.

    @ESABenefitsUK123 - just be a little bit careful when you refer to 'medical reports' as what you really need are reports that evidence how you are/ are not able to do certain tasks.

    Everyone is different but, if you ask my GP, he would most likely either not know, or repeat what I just told him when I last saw him...
